Pannonhalma brings together the architectural history of the archabbey, activities in the herb garden, wine tastings and marked trails. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Pannonhalma, you can plan around whether you mainly want to visit the church and cloister, take part in a guided program, or explore the town on foot and by bike. When visiting or tasting, bear in mind that registration or prior arrangements are required for some activities.

Pannonhalma Archabbey: Church and Cloister

In the wider travel destination of GyƑr-Moson-Sopron, the Benedictine monastery in Pannonhalma was founded in 996. The archabbey’s present-day Early Gothic, three-aisled church was consecrated in 1224. The cloister acquired its current Late Gothic form through a renovation completed in 1486. The oldest consistently preserved part of the building complex dates from the early 13th century. Together, these details show different phases in the site’s architectural history—from the early parts of the complex through the consecration of the church to the later transformation of the cloister.

Individual visitors can tour the archabbey during opening hours with an audio guide. Check current visiting hours before you set out. This makes it easier to coordinate a visit to the interiors with the other stops on your trip, without assuming that all activities follow the same schedule.

Herb Garden, Lavender and Teas

The archabbey’s herb garden program includes a visit to a small, clearly presented lavender distillery. There, visitors learn about lavender processing. The production of the lavender oil made there for centuries is also presented. Arrange your visit in advance; advance booking is required to guarantee a place on the program.

Another guided, interactive program introduces medicinal herbs from monastic gardens and their health-promoting and healing effects. Advance registration and an appointment are required to guarantee participation. After the herb garden program, visitors can sample herbal teas at the Teaház, prepared according to recipes from the archabbey’s 1735 recipe book. Seasonal herbal syrups are also available. Herbal knowledge, distillation and the subsequent tasting offer different highlights within the activities; note that the syrups are available seasonally.

Wine Tastings and PĂĄlinka

During a cellar tour at the archabbey’s winery, visitors can sample seated tasting flights of three, five or seven wines. Freshly baked pogácsa is served alongside. Find out about booking arrangements before your trip. The Pannonhalmi Pálinkárium also offers distillery tours and tastings, but these require individual advance registration. If a tasting is part of your plans, arrange registration directly for each activity you want to attend.

Exploring on Foot and by Bike

Pannonhalma has three dedicated hiking trails, marked with red, blue and green arrows. They lead from Pannonhalma Porta via FƑ tĂ©r, GesztenyĂ©s Horog and TĂłthegy. Along GesztenyĂ©s Horog, 23 information boards tell the town’s history in detail; the texts were written by town historian dr. ÁbrahĂĄm Imre. This makes it possible to combine a route through town with stops about local history, without limiting the hiking trails to a single sequence.

The treetop walkway opened in 2018. It is about 80 meters long, fish-shaped and wheelchair accessible; its highest point is 14 meters above the ground. Check before your visit whether any temporary access restrictions are in place. For a bike ride, the cycle path between Pannonhalma and GyƑr leads as far as the buildings of the Pannonhalma Porta visitor center. Check current route conditions locally.

Scents at the IllatmĂșzeum

The IllatmĂșzeum in Pannonhalma features five plants in particular and seven scents, including incense, musk and rose. These scents have been used worldwide in perfume-making for thousands of years. Visitor arrangements vary by season; advance registration is required during some periods. Check in advance which arrangements apply during your planned visit.
