Vámosszabadi can be explored through several local points of interest: a cycle path opened in 2014, four fishing lakes in the centre, the natural area of Körtvélylapos nearby, and historic details at the bell tower. These places also differ in their location: some are in the village centre, while others are in the surrounding area.

Cycle path and nearby nature

A 943-metre-long cycle path opened in Vámosszabadi in 2014. It was intended to allow locals and tourists to explore an area rich in natural assets by bicycle. At 943 metres, the path is just under a kilometre long. If you are planning a specific bike ride, check the current condition of the path beforehand.

Körtvélylapos lies near Vámosszabadi, between canals to the southwest and west of the village. White willows, grey willows, black poplars and European cornel grow along the canals. The area is home to floating and rooted aquatic plant communities, as well as protected bogbean and marsh gladiolus. Körtvélylapos is so far the only place in Szigetköz where the protected marsh gladiolus has been recorded. White water lilies, water lilies, water mint and branched bur-reed are also common there. This adds specific habitats and named plant species to the picture of the landscape.

Fishing lakes in the village centre

There are four fishing lakes in the centre of Vámosszabadi. Their location is therefore distinct from the canal area at Körtvélylapos, which lies near the village. If fishing is relevant to your travel plans, check in advance whether access is possible and under what conditions.

Bells and memorial plaque at the bell tower

At the Vámosszabadi bell tower, bells and a memorial plaque commemorate different chapters of local history. The bells currently there were made and installed in 1928. A memorial plaque was added to the bell tower during a renovation in the mid-20th century. It commemorates the Szabadi heroes who fell in the First World War. The bells thus point to a specific year, while the plaque preserves the memory of those who fell.

Wider context: Győr-Moson-Sopron

The wider travel destination of Győr-Moson-Sopron offers other distinct nature and cultural heritage themes. The Benedictine monastery in Pannonhalma was founded in 996. The World Heritage property of the Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma and its natural environment includes the monastic complex, basilica and educational buildings, as well as the Chapel of Our Lady, the Millennium Chapel, and botanical and herb gardens. Together, these elements bring the monastery, education and landscaped gardens into a shared World Heritage context.

Another regional theme is the Fertő/Neusiedler See cultural landscape. It encompasses Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and shore areas. Lake Neusiedl forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park; the Hungarian part of the lake has been protected since 1977. The Fertő-táj cultural landscape was granted UNESCO World Heritage status on 13 December 2001. For your travel plans, these broader landscape and cultural heritage themes can be distinguished from the local points of interest in Vámosszabadi.
