Szany: Churches, Pilgrimage and History
Accommodation in Szany
Szany brings together church art, pilgrimage, local history and the preservation of traditions to create a distinctive cultural focus. If you are planning your stay around historical or religious interests, these themes offer a range of points of interest: from the church’s construction phases and the Szent Anna Chapel to the local history collection and local dance traditions.
Church and Chapel: Construction History, Art and Pilgrimage
The main nave of the church was built by Bishop Ferenc Zichy in 1767. In 1867, side aisles were added to the church; two smaller towers were added at the corners of the side aisles during this expansion. The construction of the main nave and the later expansion can therefore be viewed as two separate building phases. The main nave forms the central space of the church; the side aisles complement it.
The interior furnishings have their own chronology: the richly carved high altar dates from around 1700, and the tabernacle from 1750. Ludwig Beyfuss painted the altarpiece “The Finding of the True Cross” in 1855. While the building history marks the changes of 1767 and 1867, the dates given for the furnishings span the period from around 1700 to the 19th century.
The Szent Anna Chapel was built in 1753 and expanded in 1901. Its sanctuary contains a devotional image of Saint Anne, Saint Joachim and the young Virgin Mary. The chapel is a locally protected pilgrimage site and has been a place of pilgrimage for the Rábaköz for almost 250 years. Pilgrims also come from outside the region. The building history and devotional image add to the religious significance of this pilgrimage site.
Local History and Local Heritage Collection
Szany’s local history encompasses several clearly dated milestones. As early as 1398, the settlement belonged to the estate of Kesző Castle of the Diocese of Győr. In 1437, Szany was granted market-town status; in the 16th century, it was the most populous settlement in the Rábaköz. A set of regulations for the Szany weavers’ guild dates from 1726. This timeline runs from medieval ownership through market-town status to Szany’s position in the Rábaköz; the later guild regulations draw attention to a specific local organization.
The former Episcopal Castle in Szany is a national monument. The local heritage collection is located on the ground floor of the Episcopal Castle at 2 Kossuth Street. It presents Szany’s historic industries and displays festive and everyday folk costumes from the settlement. The contrast between the two types of costume offers insight into different contexts of local clothing culture. If you are planning to visit the collection, check the visiting arrangements before you travel.
Preserving Traditions Through Dance
The Bokréta Hagyományőrző Néptánc Együttes has been active since 1931 and presents revived local traditions at dance events. Specific events may vary. If you are interested, check whether a suitable event is taking place during your stay.
