Iszkaszentgyörgy can be explored through two distinct themes: the history of Amadé–Bajzáth–Pappenheim Castle and its garden, and the trails that focus on the village’s built and natural heritage. Keeping this distinction in mind can help you plan your stay. Visitors interested in historic garden culture will find a different focus from travellers looking at places along a nature trail or at forest paths with different markings.

The castle and garden in their historical context

Amadé–Bajzáth–Pappenheim Castle in Iszkaszentgyörgy was built in the mid-18th century. From the 1820s onwards, the castle park also served as a botanical garden. Bajzáth György brought many unusual plants back from his travels abroad, and they were subsequently planted in the park. The botanical use of the park therefore began after the castle was built. In 2024, the castle garden was listed in Hungary’s database of historic gardens. The construction of the castle, the garden’s later use and its listing in 2024 represent distinct points in time in the village’s history. Check whether the castle garden is open to visitors before your visit.

The nature trail and named places

The Kastélybirtok Nature Trail has ten stations where you can explore the village’s built and natural heritage. This takes you beyond a single building to discover different features of the area. The Kőasztal rest area is located along the trail and was once a popular excursion spot for the Pappenheim family. The stone pyramid on the Kastélybirtok Nature Trail is also associated with the Pappenheim family. The Csillaghegyi lookout tower is on a route along the nature trail. Together, these named places offer different points of interest: local heritage, a historic excursion spot and connections to the Pappenheim family.

Forest trails with different levels of difficulty

Another option is the two heart-friendly forest trails. They were created in 2024 as part of the “Út az egészséghez” (“Path to Health”) programme and implemented by the municipality. The trails have different levels of difficulty, indicated by blue and red markings. When choosing what to explore, you can therefore distinguish between the Kastélybirtok Nature Trail, with its ten stations on the built and natural heritage, and the two forest trails, which are marked according to their levels of difficulty. Check the current condition of the trails before setting out.

Székesfehérvár: landscape themes in the wider destination

The wider destination of Székesfehérvár also offers its own landscape highlights. At Lake Velence, reed beds provide a habitat for thousands of waterbirds. From Pákozd, the Pákozdi Ingókövek rock formations can be reached via several hiking trails, which can also be cycled. A geological nature trail established in 1994 connects the rock formations. The wider destination thus offers different ways to experience nature: the waterbird habitat at the lake, and the rock formations and their geological exploration near Pákozd.
