Fehérvárcsurgó brings together architectural and family history with striking landscapes and trails along the Gaja Gorge. This offers different interests for your stay: the castle and churches tell stories of architecture and history, while the gorge, viewpoints and hiking trails bring the landscape to the fore. For castle visits, keep in mind that they require a guided tour and advance registration; at the Gaja-völgyi Tájcentrum, easy trails differ from the steep path to Vaskereszt.

Castle and Family History

Károlyi Castle was built to the plans of architect Heinrich Koch. The Károlyi family exhibition tells the story of the family in the 19th and 20th centuries through archival photographs and film footage from the respective periods. The architecture and family history thus offer two different ways to explore the castle.

Visits to Károlyi Castle take place daily, but are only possible with a guided tour. Advance registration is required because places are limited. Tours may be held in English, French, German or Italian. Check the latest visitor information before travelling, as visit details may change.

A separate guided library tour is part of the “Fel a titkos lépcsőn!” programme. It takes place once a month on a Saturday announced in advance; advance registration is required because places are limited.

The Kulturális Találkozó Központ in Fehérvárcsurgó is open to visitors. The Károlyi József Alapítvány regularly organizes international conferences, exhibitions and concerts. The events programme lists the 16th and 17th editions of the European String Quartet Festival “Quartettissimo”. Dates and participants may vary between editions, so check the latest announcements if a concert is to determine your travel dates.

Churches and Architectural History

The Reformed Church of Fehérvárcsurgó was built in 1789. Its onion-shaped tower is considered a characteristic feature of late Baroque church architecture in Transdanubia; the interior furnishings also date from the late 18th century.

The Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria has medieval origins; Catholics have used it again since 1748. Together, the churches reflect different historical timelines: medieval origins and renewed Catholic use on the one hand, and late Baroque architecture on the other.

The Gaja Gorge and Scenic Spots

The Gaja Gorge is four kilometres long and characterised by steep walls. Vaskereszt stands at one of the gorge’s most striking viewpoints and commemorates a count from the Károlyi family.

A surfaced but steep path leads from the central grounds of the Gaja-völgyi Tájcentrum to Vaskereszt. The centre also has designated forest picnic areas, fire pits and easy hiking trails. When planning, it is important to distinguish between the easy trails at the centre and the steep path to the viewpoint.

The Alba-Regia Spring is a developed spring and rest area with an amphitheatre-like design. Sobri-Jóska Cave in the Gaja Gorge is approximately 22 metres long. Both places complement the views of the gorge with different landscape features.

The Károlyi Lookout Tower offers panoramic views of the forests of the eastern Bakony, the Gaja Gorge and the water reservoir. In the grounds of Károlyi Castle, a virtual botanical tour introduces the park’s old trees.
