Nadap: Elevation Benchmark, Built Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Nadap
Nadap brings together a nationally significant elevation benchmark, architectural history, Vörösmarty Mihály’s baptismal font and landscapes in the Velence Mountains. When planning your stay, you can distinguish between the main attractions: the Szintezési Ősjegy represents surveying; the church and protected streets reflect local history; and the mountains and slopes offer views, trails and natural scenery.
The Szintezési Ősjegy elevation benchmark
Since 1888, the Szintezési Ősjegy in Nadap has served as Hungary’s elevation benchmark. Elevation measurements throughout the country are referenced to it. Those interested in surveying will find a tangible connection here to Hungary’s elevation data and the nationwide reference system.
Church, townscape and history
The present-day Palermói Szent Rozália Church in Nadap is a Neo-Gothic building designed by architect Jenő Hübner. Individual sections of Haladás utca and the streetscape of Rákóczi utca are locally protected. Templom-hegy, on the edge of Nadap, is considered a historic and spiritual place. This peaceful, wooded excursion spot offers views of Nadap, towards Lovasberény and as far as the Meleg-hegy mountain range. Vörösmarty Mihály was baptised in Nadap on 3 December 1800.
Bronze Age weapons, jewellery and everyday objects found in the area around Nadap can be viewed at the Szent István Király Museum in Székesfehérvár. Before visiting the museum, check whether these objects are currently on display.
Landscape and activities
Nadap lies in a particularly scenic part of the Velence Mountains, where landforms, forests, rock formations and man-made memorials come together. A considerable portion of the undeveloped land is protected and belongs to the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Csúcsos-hegy offers views of Lake Velence and the surrounding wooded slopes, and can be reached by a pleasant hiking trail. It is popular with hikers, cyclists and amateur photographers, and is also a favourite destination for paragliders, although there are only a few launch sites there. Several local hiking trails cross Meleg-hegy along Nadap’s southern to south-eastern boundary. Its slopes are home to wildflower meadows, vineyards and rare bird species. The two mountains therefore offer different ways to experience the landscape: views and a range of activities at Csúcsos-hegy, and trails and natural scenery at Meleg-hegy.
Horse riding is also possible in Nadap. The village is considered a starting point for hiking, panoramic photography, family outings and peaceful relaxation.
What to know before your visit
The Szintezési Ősjegy is freely accessible. A short, easy walking path leads there from the centre of Nadap; information boards and signposts mark the route. Check local conditions before travelling. Vörösmarty Mihály’s baptismal font can be viewed in the church during Sunday and holiday services; groups can visit by prior arrangement.
More nature experiences in the wider destination of Székesfehérvár
The Pákozdi Ingókövek can be reached from Pákozd via several hiking trails that are also suitable for cycling. A geological nature trail, established in 1994, connects the rock formations. The reed beds at Velencei-tó provide habitat for thousands of waterbirds.
