Szár brings together religious history, sweeping views of the village and surrounding area, and cultural activities. Two places give the village’s history a tangible presence: the Calvary, built around 1860, and the more than 250-year-old Church of St. John the Baptist. The Szár Minority Dance Group also offers opportunities to take part and performs regularly. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: would you most like to explore historical connections, enjoy a view, or take cultural activities into account? The options also differ in how you can experience them: a viewpoint, a religious site, and a group where participation or attending a performance may take centre stage.

Calvary: History and Views

The Calvary in Szár was built around 1860 using donations from Imre Vénusz, a priest born in Szár, and the village’s residents. Its origins connect the priest’s personal ties to the village with the residents’ contributions. On the outskirts of Szár, the crosses on Calvary Hill offer sweeping views of the village and its surroundings. This gives the historic site a scenic dimension too: the story of its construction and the view over Szár provide two distinct focal points.

Church and Relic

The Church of St. John the Baptist is more than 250 years old—considerably older than the Calvary, built around 1860. Visitors can view the blood relic of the church’s patron saint, John the Baptist; the relic is considered unique in Hungary. In addition to the church’s age, its patron, John the Baptist, is also a point of interest. If you would like to see the relic, check visiting arrangements in advance.

Dance Group and Event Dates

The Szár Minority Dance Group offers adults and children opportunities to take part and performs regularly at balls and cultural events. This opens up two different options: you can ask about opportunities to participate, or look out for an event featuring a performance. Participating and attending a performance involve different planning considerations. If seeing a performance is important to your trip, check event dates in advance.

In the Wider Destination of Székesfehérvár

The wider destination of Székesfehérvár offers other nature attractions. The Pákozd Rocking Stones can be reached from Pákozd via several hiking trails that are also suitable for cycling. In addition, the geological trail, established in 1994, connects the rock formations. The trails can therefore also be used by bike, while the geological trail focuses on geology. At Lake Velence, the reed beds provide a habitat for thousands of waterbirds. The wider destination of Székesfehérvár thus brings together two distinct nature attractions: the geological formations of the Pákozd Rocking Stones and the lakeside reed-bed habitat.
