Get to know Ásotthalom through nature, cycling and culture

If you are looking for a hotel in Ásotthalom, local highlights can help shape your travel plans: the Ruzsa-fa is a distinctive natural landmark, a completed section of EuroVelo 13 is available for cycling, and several cultural sites offer different historical perspectives.

Ruzsa-fa and Tanulmányi-erdő

The Ruzsa-fa is a landmark of Ásotthalom and also the oldest and largest tree in the Tanulmányi-erdő. The Tanulmányi-erdő is managed by the Bedő Albert Forestry Technical School in Ásotthalom. The estimated diameter of the Ruzsa-fa at breast height is 154 centimeters, its circumference is 484 centimeters, and its estimated timber volume is 20.4 cubic meters. Diameter and circumference describe different measurements of the tree, while timber volume provides another indication of its size. All three figures are estimates and give you specific details about this natural landmark.

The Ásotthalom–Kissor section

The completed Ásotthalom–Kissor section is 4.1 kilometers long and is part of the international EuroVelo 13 cycle route. It was completed and handed over in September 2026. The section has also made cycling on Road 5511 safer. For travel planning, the length of the local section and its place within EuroVelo 13 are different pieces of information: the 4.1 kilometers refer to Ásotthalom–Kissor, while EuroVelo 13 identifies the broader international route. This makes it possible to distinguish the specific section length from the name of the cycle route.

History and places of remembrance

One of Ásotthalom’s major tourist attractions is the Rózsa Sándor Élményház. Since 2014, the museum has been dedicated to the life of the once most famous outlaw of the Great Hungarian Plain and to that historical period. The Élményház includes a prison cell designed as a panopticon. The Tömörkény-ház in Ásotthalom offers a different cultural focus: it includes an artists’ room dedicated to Tömörkény István and Kisteleki Ede. The two houses therefore offer different perspectives: the Élményház focuses on a historical figure and his era, while the Tömörkény-ház features an artists’ room dedicated to two people.
