Szakáld between landscape and church history
Accommodation in Szakáld
Szakáld lies southeast of Miskolc and Nyékládháza. The stated distances are 22 km and 10 km, respectively.
Getting there and finding your way
Szakáld can be reached via the Nyékládháza–Mezőcsát main road. At Hejőszalonta, turn off this road; the village is 2 km from there. Road conditions may change, so it is worth checking the route before setting off.
One report records that passenger services were discontinued on 4 March 2007.
Landscape between the Hejő and Sajó
Szakáld lies on a plain bordered by the Hejő stream and the Sajó River. In earlier times, flooding from these waterways posed a threat to the inhabitants. The waterways therefore shape both the description of the landscape and the historical context of the village. The Dél-borsodi mezőség begins south of the village boundary. The foothills of the Bükk Mountains lie north of the boundary. These directional references give a more precise picture of how Szakáld is set within its surrounding landscape.
Churches and local history
The renovated Roman Catholic Szent Anna Church has a wooden roof turret. The Greek Catholic church adds another architectural feature with a specific historical connection: when it was built, it was consecrated in 1912 in memory of those who fell in the Battle of Muhi. The Greek Catholic church is considered Szakáld’s most important sight.
Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén as the wider setting
The wider travel destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén encompasses other distinct themes. The Baradla-Domica cave system is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Caves of the Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. The short Aggtelek Cave Tour is 1 km long, takes 60 minutes, and is rated easy. Its length, duration, and difficulty rating provide different points of reference for planning such a tour. In the wider travel destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, the nature trail at Miskolc Zoo and Cultural Park complements the nature themes with specific structures: it has a 9-metre-high observation tower and a 32-metre-long suspension bridge. In the Zemplén Landscape Protection Area, the natural conditions influence the flora and fauna. The parkland of Miskolctapolca forms an arboretum with numerous native species and includes a boating lake with several small islands.
The history of Diósgyőr Castle also belongs to this wider context: it flourished during the reign of King Louis the Great in the 14th century and later served as a residence and a wedding gift for six queens. In the Tokaj wine region, the climate, soil quality, and slope exposure are suitable for growing grapes; at the same time, the region is legally protected as a designated wine-growing area. In the wider travel destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, the Lillafüred nature trail presents local historical sights and natural features. The Lillafüred Forest Railway runs from Diósgyőr via Lillafüred to Garadna.
