Arnót: Cultural History and Nature Watching
Accommodation in Arnót
Arnót combines local cultural attractions with opportunities to observe nature nearby. The Wass Albert Memorial, the exhibits at the tájház, and the birdlife along the Kis-Sajó and at Bánya tó offer different points of interest within the destination.
Cultural History and Rural Life
The Wass Albert Memorial was inaugurated on 20 August 2010 on the grounds opposite the building at 130 Petőfi Sándor utca. The date places the memorial in the more recent history of the village.
The tájház is located at 60 Petőfi Sándor utca. A description from September 2024 mentions a retro exhibition and the Jelenkori Fotógyűjtemény. Old agricultural machines were displayed in the garden pavilion; the exhibition also included tools once used on village farms. In 2023, the Helyi Értékek Bemutatóterme exhibition space was also opened on the tájház grounds. If you would like to visit the tájház, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
An event about wedding culture took place in Arnót on 9 November 2019. It included the exhibition “Újmenyecske főkötők a Kárpát-medencéből” featuring a collection from the Tobán Hagyományőrző Népművészeti Egyesület in Szihalom; a playhouse for children was also offered. The exhibition title refers to headdresses worn by newly married women from the Carpathian Basin.
The inclusion of four values associated with Arnót in the county’s value register was reported in 2024: borsodi lakodalmas fonott kalács, borsodi májuskosár, the European bee-eater, and the Lutheran church and its Rococo altar. A municipal walking tour plan from 2023 listed the tájház, the Lutheran church and the Bénó nursery as stops in Arnót.
Birdlife Nearby
Wild ducks and coots can be seen in the area around the Kis-Sajó and Bánya tó. Swans, wild geese and black-headed gulls with pale heads occasionally pass through. This means that local wildlife watching can be complemented by the occasional passage of other species.
More Places of Interest in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County
Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County offers other distinct cultural and nature-related attractions, separate from Arnót’s local focus. The Baradla-Domica cave system is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. The short Aggtelek Cave Tour is 1 kilometer long, takes 60 minutes and is rated easy. Its length, duration and difficulty provide a clear basis for planning, distinct from Arnót’s local cultural attractions. In Miskolc, Diósgyőr Castle flourished during the reign of King Louis the Great in the 14th century; later, it served as a residence and as a wedding gift for six queens. Another regional example is the Lillafüred Forest Railway, which runs from Diósgyőr via Lillafüred to Garadna. As timetables can change, check the current times before travelling.
