Kazincbarcika: Art, History and Crafts
Accommodation in Kazincbarcika
In Kazincbarcika, public art, historic buildings and collections, a local craft tradition, and swimming and wellness facilities offer different themes for a stay. If you are looking for a hotel, you can choose the focus of your trip based on which of these aspects of the town interests you most.
Public Art
Kazincbarcika’s public art collection includes 34 works made of bronze, cast aluminium, stone, chamotte, cast iron or treated wood. Two sculptures by SzĹ‘ke Gábor MiklĂłs add distinctive touches: “A SzĂnes unikornis,” created in 2013, stands at the roundabout where Egressy Ăşt and JĂłszerencsĂ©t Ăşt meet. “KĂnai Sárkány,” from 2014, is located on FĹ‘ tĂ©r. The artist, year of creation and specific location give each work its own connection to the town.
The bust of Egressy Bénis, created in 1974, is also among the public artworks. It is by Nagy István János and is located at Fő tér 5. Those interested in local history will also find a historic 15th-century building in the Reformed Church in Kazincbarcika-felső. The sculpture, bust and church thus represent different ways of exploring Kazincbarcika’s art and architectural history.
Village Heritage and Old Cellars
In Kazincbarcika’s village district, porch-fronted houses, lever wells and wheel wells, a barn, a stable, lilac bushes and small village streets evoke the peaceful world of the 19th century. Together, these features convey a sense of older rural architecture and everyday life. Rows of old wine cellars can also be found in the city’s southern hills and northern areas. They complement the historic buildings and streets with another aspect of the local architectural heritage.
Crafts and Railway History
Gömöri vert csipke, or Gömör bobbin lace, is a distinctive local craft tradition. Since 1993, its production has been taught and promoted in Kazincbarcika. The craft has become rare and is in danger of being forgotten; ways of passing it on include exhibitions, lace-making demonstrations and lectures. For those interested in crafts, the subject brings together the lace itself and the transmission of the skills involved.
The Kazincbarcikai vasúttörténeti gyűjtemény, or Kazincbarcika Railway Collection, offers another perspective on the town’s history. Its holdings include uniforms, armbands, rank insignia, caps and other uniform items. It also contains artefacts from the Kazincbarcika–Ormospuszta and Kazincbarcika–Rudabánya railway lines, as well as station photographs and documents. Clothing, images and written records offer different insights into the railway history connected with the two lines.
Swimming, Wellness and Activities
The Kazincbarcikai VĂzi Komplexum brings together several types of pool and a dedicated wellness area. Facilities include a competition pool with a spectator stand, two teaching pools of different sizes and an outdoor pool. The wellness area features Finnish and infrared saunas, a steam cabin, plunge pools, a whirlpool and a sitting pool. Swimming and wellness can therefore be enjoyed as distinct activities. As facilities may change, check the complex’s current information before your visit.
At Völgypark, Játékpark offers visitors of all ages an entertaining, active experience. Along with the water complex, it adds opportunities for active recreation to the town’s cultural attractions. Which aspect of Kazincbarcika matters most to you can also help guide your choice of hotel for your stay.
