Jósvafő offers a variety of things to enjoy during a stay: the old town with its church, a Tájház that received an award in 2007, and trails through caves and the surrounding area. If you are looking for hotels in Jósvafő, you can start by considering whether culture, a cave tour or a hike will be the main focus of your trip. For the hikes, the trail lengths and—on the longer loop—an approximate duration will help you plan.

Church, Tájház and educational programs

The present-day church in Jósvafő’s old town is surrounded by a defensive wall. Together, the church and wall form a distinctive architectural feature of the village. The Tájház received the “Az év múzeuma 2007” (Museum of the Year 2007) award. This recognition is a cultural point of interest in its own right, alongside the church building: the Tájház’s award is one focal point, while the connection between the church and defensive wall is another.

At the small manor house at Táncsics Mihály utca 1, the Aggteleki Nemzeti Park Oktatóközpont offers lectures, classes, outdoor and craft activities, as well as forest school programs for kindergarten and school groups. The program therefore appeals to a different audience than the cave and hiking trails. For current arrangements, it is best to contact the center directly.

Cave tours with different routes

The Jósvafő short tour in the Baradla Cave passes by or through the formations Krokodilszáj, Hentesüzlet and Tóparti kastély in its second section. It then continues to Óriások terme. These named formations and the endpoint give the route its distinctive character.

The tour through Kossuth Cave follows a different route: you pass over rocks, cross a wire-rope bridge above a lake and climb ladders to reach Reménytelen-szifon. The two cave routes therefore differ in their named landmarks and sections of the route. Before planning, confirm the current availability of the Kossuth Cave tour with the park administration.

Hiking from Jósvafő

The Tohonya-Kuriszlán educational trail has a longer loop and a shorter hike. The longer loop is 9 kilometers long, starts in Jósvafő and takes about six hours at a leisurely pace. The shorter hike is 4.5 kilometers long and returns to Jósvafő via 12 stops. This lets you choose between the longer loop, with its approximate duration, and the shorter route with its twelve stops.

The Tohonya-Kuriszlán educational trail also connects 25 geological, geomorphological and natural features in the area around Jósvafő. The trails described offer more than a choice of distance: you can plan around both the length and the features connected by the educational trail.

The caves can also be considered in a broader context: the Baradla-Domica Cave System is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Caves of the Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. Another natural attraction in the region is the Hucul horses on the pastures of Gergés-lápa, around 1.5 kilometers north of Jósvafő. The herd can be viewed there year-round. As animal management arrangements may change, check the current visiting conditions in advance.

The church, Tájház, educational programs, cave tours and hiking trails offer different starting points for planning a trip.
