Dévaványa brings together architectural history, museum themes, crafts, a weekly market and nature experiences in the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in town, these highlights can help you plan: they range from a church on the main square and another church to a museum collection and a weekly market, as well as attractions on the edge of the municipality and a cycling tour through the Dévaványai-Ecsegi puszták. This lets you shape your stay around culture, local life or nature watching.

Churches with distinct features

The Catholic church stands on the main square. Built in 1908, it combines a late Baroque style with Neoclassical elements and has the character of a protected historic building. Its year of construction and style give it a clearly defined architectural profile.

The Reformed church stands out for its 63-metre-high tower and is considered one of the tallest churches in the Tiszántúl. Its acoustics are also noteworthy, making church concerts possible. The two churches have different distinguishing features: one is notable for its period and style, the other for its tower height and sound.

Museum, collection and crafts

The history of the museum institution is linked to the collection of Dr. Bereczki Imre. The ethnographer and archaeologist spent 65 years gathering collection, archival and ethnographic materials. On 14 April 2000, the collection in Dévaványa became a museum institution.

The permanent ethnographic exhibition “Ősök emléke kísért” recalls the former way of life in Ványa. Prepared beds, a stove, a loom and kitchen utensils draw attention to home life and household activities. A different perspective is offered by the permanent archaeological exhibition, which opened in 2006. It displays artefacts relating to the Körös, alföldi vonaldíszes, tiszai, tiszapolgári and péceli cultures. In this way, domestic life and archaeological finds are presented as distinct themes.

At the museum’s craft studio, children and adults can try activities including weaving, pottery on the wheel, felting, leatherwork and bead threading. If a workshop activity is important to your plans, check its current availability before your visit.

Morning farmers’ market

The farmers’ market in Dévaványa takes place weekly on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings. This schedule may influence the day of your visit if you would like to combine the market with other visits around town. As the listed market days should be confirmed, check locally before basing your plans on them.

Nature on the outskirts and a cycling tour

The Sterbetz István Túzokvédelmi Látogatóközpont is located on the edge of the municipality. It has a museum and an area where native domestic animals and live great bustards are displayed. The centre offers guided visits to protected areas and along nature trails. This adds a nature theme to the town’s churches and museum highlights.

On one section of the recommended cycling tour through the Dévaványai-Ecsegi puszták, cyclists may encounter pheasants, partridges, roe deer or hares. After two kilometres, the route reaches Csordajárás, the former communal pasture. From there, it continues west and, after one kilometre, joins the main road between Dévaványa and Kisújszállás via Kossuth utca. The route description thus combines possible wildlife sightings with specific landmarks and a named road connection.
