Nagybánhegyes – Church, Park and Thermal Waters
Accommodation in Nagybánhegyes
Key features of Nagybánhegyes include its Protestant church architecture, public spaces and thermal waters. Together, they offer different insights into the town: historic architectural styles stand alongside the market square and park, while the thermal baths add another facet.
Church architecture in Nagybánhegyes
The Protestant church was built in 1895. It is designed in the eclectic style and features a façade tower and a polygonal apse. The multi-sided shape of the apse and the tower give the building distinct architectural accents. The church is considered a heritage building.
Near the Protestant church are a small Protestant church and a granary. Both buildings were built in 1859 in the late Neoclassical style. Their features include a columned portico and a gabled façade. The buildings therefore differ both in construction date and style: the Protestant church from 1895 is eclectic, while the nearby small Protestant church and granary, dating from 1859, are late Neoclassical.
Market Square, Park and Monument
Nagybánhegyes Market Square and central park were completed in 2002. The central park is home to protected trees believed to be around a hundred years old, as well as a fountain. A monument to the fallen stands in the main square. The public spaces are distinguished by their respective features: trees and a fountain define the park, while the monument is the main place of remembrance in the square.
Thermal water and its properties
The thermal water at the baths is considered particularly rich in minerals. At the same time, it has low water hardness. Low water hardness should not be confused with a low mineral content: the water contains sodium bicarbonate, metaboric acid, bromide, iodide and fluoride. This distinction makes the description of the water more precise and preserves two different properties of the thermal water.
When planning your trip to Nagybánhegyes, the church and other historic buildings offer an architectural focus, while the park, square and monument provide different points of interest. The thermal water adds another dimension to these local highlights through its distinctive composition.
More nature and culture experiences in the wider destination of Békés
The wider destination of Békés offers other distinct nature and culture experiences. The Körösvölgyi Animal Park in Szarvas is set in a 26-hectare grove. Along a walking trail about two kilometres long are bird aviaries, animal houses, wetlands and spacious enclosures. The Jégmadár Water Nature Trail begins at the park’s jetty. It follows a one-kilometre stretch of the Szarvas–Békésszentandrás oxbow lake; eight floating buoy stations introduce visitors to the oxbow lake and its flora and fauna. The nature trail is accessible only by canoe or boat and is intended primarily for canoeists and rowboat users without an expert guide.
The Mágor-pusztai Trail offers a different distance: it is just over 500 metres long and introduces visitors to the natural and cultural-historical values of the protected area. By comparison, the Jégmadár section is longer and accessible only by water. These differences help you assess the nature experiences in the wider destination of Békés by length and access, without confusing them with the sights of Nagybánhegyes.
