Remembrance and exhibitions in Újkígyós
The monument to the 1848–49 Revolution and War of Independence stands in Wenckheim Park in Újkígyós. It was made to designs by sculptor Katalin Gera and installed in Újkígyós in 2014. A polished, dark-grey granite block and a bronze flag sculpture define the work; the stepped pedestal is clad in off-white limestone slabs. The dedication and choice of materials give the monument a distinctive place in local culture.
The headquarters of the Ipolyi Arnold Folk College in Újkígyós houses two exhibitions: one on local history and a permanent exhibition on the Csángó heritage. The subjects are distinct, but both are presented at the same location. In this way, the history of Újkígyós is brought together with an exhibition dedicated to the Csángó heritage.

It is around 6 kilometres long in total, of which 4.6 kilometres lie within the administrative area of Újkígyós. More nature-related experiences in the wider destination of Békés
The Körösvölgyi Animal Park is located in Anna-liget in Szarvas, within the wider destination of Békés. The park is set in a 26-hectare grove. A walking trail of about two kilometres passes bird aviaries, animal houses, wetlands and spacious enclosures. This gives you both an approximate route length and a variety of nature and wildlife areas to explore on a walk.
The Jégmadár Water Nature Trail begins at the pier in Körösvölgyi Animal Park. It follows a one-kilometre stretch of the Szarvas–Békésszentandrás oxbow lake. Eight floating buoy stations introduce visitors to the oxbow and its animal and plant life, especially canoeists and rowboaters without an expert guide. Unlike the park’s walking trail, which is about two kilometres long, this nature trail can only be reached by canoe or boat. So when comparing the two nature experiences, the means of transport is more important than the length.
Another nature-focused destination in Békés is the Sterbetz István Bustard Conservation Visitor Centre in Réhely, near Dévaványa. This is the only place in Hungary where visitors can see great bustards up close. Guided tours, birdwatching, nature photography, themed programmes and astronomy presentations can be requested in advance. If you are particularly interested in great bustards or one of these programmes, bear the advance-request requirement in mind when planning your visit.
