Nagyharsány: Sculpture Park, Szársomlyó and Ördögkatlan Festival
Accommodation in Nagyharsány
For travellers, Nagyharsány is best explored through three distinct themes: the Szoborpark, tours of Szársomlyó and the Ördögkatlan Festival. You can choose your focus depending on whether you plan to spend time on art and its history, take a guided tour to the summit or attend the festival.
Szoborpark and Szársomlyó
The history of the Nagyharsányi Szoborpark dates back to 1967. The idea then arose to establish an artists’ colony in the former quarry on Szársomlyó. This origin places the park within a specific artistic history. The Kikerics Panorama Trail opened in 2020. It runs through the sculpture park and introduces visitors to the values of Szársomlyó. The trail thus combines a visit to the park with a themed introduction to the mountain.
A programme lasting around an hour and a half at the Nagyharsányi Szoborpark begins in the reception building with a short introductory talk about art. A guided walk then takes visitors to characteristic works from different creative periods. The sequence gives the visit two parts: first the introduction, then a look at the works. Please confirm your participation with the operator in advance.
The guided hikes to the summit are a separate option: the Duna–Dráva National Park Directorate offers guaranteed, expert-led tours year-round, five times a week, for individuals and groups, from the Nagyharsányi Szoborpark to the summit of Szársomlyó. While the programme lasting around an hour and a half includes a talk and a walk to see works, this tour goes from the park to the summit. Check practical details with the Directorate before your trip.
Festival and cycling route
Nagyharsány has been one of the Ördögkatlan Festival’s venues since its early days. Festival dates and programmes vary. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates and programme. Nagyharsány is also part of the Háromfolyó cycling route. If you are planning a bike tour, it is advisable to consult an up-to-date route map before setting off. This keeps the two types of planning distinct: for the festival, dates and programme are key; for the cycling route, it is the current route.
More themes in the wider travel destination of Baranya
The wider travel destination of Baranya also offers distinct cultural and nature themes. In Pécs, the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae comprises decorated tombs from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian wall paintings. Also in Pécs, the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter features the exhibitions “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition”, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history. The Quarter’s freely accessible outdoor area can be entered and used free of charge during opening hours.
Near Szaporca, the Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre offers an interactive exhibition, a demonstration farming area with practical management, and three themed educational trails. These provide information about traditional agriculture, the Ős-Dráva Programme and the wildlife along the Drava. Siklós Castle is another cultural attraction in Baranya: it is one of Hungary’s best-preserved military complexes and a significant Hungarian Renaissance building. Modernisation of the museum wing also opened up the Gothic section, which had previously been inaccessible to visitors.
