Alsómocsolád offers several starting points for planning a stay: architectural heritage, art in the castle park and nature trails on a range of themes. If you are looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: Would you like to discover the town’s sights, compare woodland and water-related themes, or include other activities as well?

Architectural Heritage and Art in the Castle Park

Built in 1836, the Church of St. Andrew is one of Alsómocsolád’s most important architectural heritage landmarks. Sztankovánszky Castle is also among the town’s most important architectural heritage landmarks. Works by sculptor Ferenc Tischler can be seen in the castle park. This brings together sacred architecture, the castle as a building and sculpture in the park as distinct cultural points of interest.

An organ made by the Angster company was presented to a church in Alsómocsolád on August 20, 1942, as part of a major celebration. Alongside the year the Church of St. Andrew was built, this date provides another point of reference for the town’s history.

Trails on a Range of Themes

The trails can be distinguished by their themes. The Faluséta Trail introduces visitors to the sights of Alsómocsolád. The Mókus Nature Trail covers the tree species characteristic of Alsómocsolád and its surroundings, as well as forest wildlife; on the Nagy-kócsag Nature Trail, visitors can learn about the wildlife of wetlands and riverbanks. The forest nature trail in Virágsűrű introduces visitors to the flora and fauna of the forest. You can choose between local sights, woodland themes, and wildlife along waterways and shores.

A forest fitness trail and a nature trail were established in 2004 in Virágsűrű, which is managed as a park forest. Guests can enjoy a panoramic view from Kálvária Hill.

More Activities for Visitors

Visitor activities include rides in a Pletna boat. A Boeing 737 simulator is also available, with an introduction to the game included. These offer further activities alongside nature trails and architectural heritage. Check the availability of these offers before making your plans.

The Wider Setting of Baranya

The wider travel destination of Baranya also offers other cultural and nature-related themes. In Pécs, the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae contains decorated tombs dating from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian wall paintings. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter includes the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” displays, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history.

Near Szaporca, the Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre offers an interactive exhibition, a demonstration farm area with practical farming activities, and three thematic nature trails. These provide information about traditional agriculture, the Ős-Dráva Programme and the wildlife along the Drava. The farming area features native Hungarian livestock, including Hungarian Grey cattle, Mangalica pigs, Hucul horses, and old breeds of sheep and poultry.

Siklós Castle is also one of Baranya’s important cultural attractions. It is one of Hungary’s best-preserved military complexes and also one of the country’s most significant Renaissance buildings. Modernisation of the museum wing opened the previously inaccessible Gothic section to visitors. At the Nagyharsány Sculpture Park, the “Art in Nature” programme includes a guided tour. In the Villány cellar row, visitors can go from cellar to cellar all year round and taste wines and delicious food.
