There are several ways to discover Pécsvárad: an interactive educational trail leads to places of remembrance for the German community, while the castle and chapel explore art and everyday history. If you prefer to be outdoors, you’ll find routes to the 682-metre-high Zengő; the Zengő-kiskör is around 14 kilometres long. The cultural programme also adds its own distinctive touch. When looking for accommodation, it helps to first consider whether your stay will focus on the town’s history, a hike or an event date.

On foot through the town and mountain landscape

The educational trail created by the German Nationality Self-Government of Pécsvárad presents the distinctive features of Pécsvárad’s German community at seven stops and through several interactive elements. It leads from Szentháromság tér via the former Német utca to Mott tér, taking in places of remembrance for Pécsvárad’s German community. You can optionally extend the loop towards the church and castle. The route thus links stops in the town with a glimpse into local history.

Several hiking trails lead from Pécsvárad to the 682-metre-high summit of Zengő. The Zengő-kiskör starts at Pécsvárad Castle, goes via the summit and returns to Pécsvárad via Hosszúhetény. The route is about 14 kilometres long, with around 500 metres of elevation gain. Most of it runs outside Pécsvárad, although the start and return are in town. The distance and elevation figures help you gauge the scope of this hike and distinguish it from a walk along the educational trail.

Castle, school and everyday history

The chapel at Pécsvárad Castle contains a Byzantine-style mural which, according to tradition, depicts the Archangel Michael. The school history exhibition offers a different way to explore the past, taking visitors into a 1930s classroom. Children can sit at the old school desks and experience a lesson as it would have been taught according to the school customs of the time. You must contact the venue before visiting.

In the castle courtyard, visitors can view historical baking and cooking equipment displayed in the demonstration kitchen and see how food was prepared in the past. Together with the mural and the historical classroom, this offers a glimpse into different aspects of art, education and everyday life. Each theme is clearly distinct: the chapel features the mural, the exhibition recreates the former classroom, and the demonstration kitchen showcases historical equipment and cooking methods.

Fair and living traditions

The Pécsváradi Leányvásár (Pécsvárad Fair of Lasses) was first held under this name in 1966, featuring performances by 15 folk dance groups. The fair has been held every year in October since 1996. Its enduring highlights include a gathering of traditional folk dance groups and a presentation and market of handicrafts. The programme also includes a parade of traditional folk groups, a dance procession, a grand evening show and a handicraft market in the town centre. If you’d like to plan your stay around the fair, check the dates before your trip.
