Discover Harewood and find hotels
Accommodation in Harewood
Harewood brings together architecture and landscape, historic sites, family and nature activities, and a fully guided tour of an active television set. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on history, nature, family activities or Emmerdale.
Harewood House and its landscape
Harewood House is a Grade I-listed building. This status gives the house a specific architectural appeal for travellers interested in listed buildings. Harewood also has more than 140 acres of gardens, woodland and parkland. These landscapes offer a different focus from the house’s designation, making room for garden and nature themes.
History across several eras
All Saints’ Church encompasses Harewood’s entire known history, from Norman times to the present day. The church is still occasionally used for exhibitions commissioned by the Harewood House Trust. Gawthorpe Hall offers a different historical perspective: the manor house dates from the 13th century and was home to the Gascoigne family for over 400 years. Today, a small part of an archaeological project from 2009 is visible. This makes it possible to distinguish the broad historical scope of All Saints’ Church from the more specific connections to the manor house, family history and excavation at Gawthorpe Hall.
Stupa in the Himalayan Garden
The Harewood Stupa in the Himalayan Garden was built in 2004 by local craftspeople working with Buddhist monks from the Kingdom of Bhutan. It offers a place for reflection. Visitors are advised to walk around the stupa three times clockwise. This adds another cultural connection to the historic buildings, distinct from the other themes in its origins and contemplative purpose.
Family and nature activities
The Adventure Playscape is designed for children of all ages and abilities. Its features include an access slide, sensory-rich equipment at a low height and an accessible swing. Sylvascope offers a different focus: this immersive treehouse structure invites families to immerse themselves in nature, spark their curiosity and learn through play. Woodland Wonderland is part of the Three Parks Walk circular trail.
The nature experiences also differ in style. The Lakeside Woodland Garden offers peaceful walks, beautiful views and opportunities to connect with nature. The Nature Safari activity involves a Nature Safari Bag, which can be collected from Visitor Information in the Courtyard. This puts walks and views alongside an activity with a specific collection point; the best choice depends on the kind of nature experience you are looking for during your stay.
Emmerdale Village Set Tour
For Emmerdale fans, the fully guided Emmerdale Village Set Tour takes you around an active, working television set within the Harewood Estate. The route passes Bob’s Café, The Woolpack, the village church and rows of stone cottages. Harewood is the pick-up and drop-off point for the Emmerdale Village Tours. The guided format, active set and named stops give this excursion a different focus from the landscape, nature and history themes.
