Scarborough: Coast, Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Scarborough
Scarborough brings together coast, culture and trails to create a destination with a range of ways to spend the day. If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Scarborough, you can plan your stay around the experiences you have in mind: the sea, cultural history, or walking and cycling routes.
Two Bays and Seaside Trails
Scarborough Castle crowns the headland between North Bay and South Bay. North Bay is one of the two bays and is suitable for water sports, especially surfing; conditions and facilities may vary. At low tide, rocky areas with rock pools emerge on the beach. If you’d like to observe them, plan the timing and activity around the tide and conditions.
A flat, even walking path along Royal Albert Drive loops around the castle headland and connects the two bays in about 30 minutes. A longer route option is the 21-mile Cinder Track from Scarborough to Whitby. It follows a disused railway line that was converted into a bridleway and is used by walkers and cyclists. The two distances help with different planning questions: the walk is described by its approximate duration, while the Cinder Track is described by its length.
Scarborough’s open-top bus services mainly connect the South Bay and North Bay promenades. As schedules and seasonal services may change, check the current services if you’d like to use them in your plans.
Museum and Theatre
The Rotunda Museum opened in 1829 and is among the world’s first purpose-built museums. It displays artefacts from the Star Carr Collection, which are 11,000 years old; individual exhibitions may change. A visit therefore combines the history of an early museum building with a collection of objects that reach far into the past.
The Stephen Joseph Theatre is an independent theatre and cinema in Scarborough, directly opposite the railway station. Alongside its stage and film programme, the theatre offers youth theatre groups and a choir as ways to get involved. Both performances and creative activities are therefore part of the venue’s programme.
Scarborough Open Air Theatre opened in 1932 in Northstead Manor Gardens. Since its official reopening, it has hosted some of the biggest stars in the music industry. If you’d like to attend a particular performance, check the latest event dates in advance.
Parks, Gardens and Local History
Peasholm Park is an oriental-style urban park in North Bay. Its features include a boating lake and a Japanese-style pagoda; the park also has a long tradition of miniature naval battles. Specific dates may vary, so if you’re planning to attend one of these events, it’s worth checking the latest information.
In South Cliff Gardens, the Italian Gardens combine formal planting and seating with a fishpond. Watched over by a figure of Mercury, the winged Roman messenger god, the pond is one of the garden’s features. Another perspective on local history is offered by the Love Stories Audio Trail in South Cliff Gardens: it presents true love stories with orchestral accompaniment and a community choir.
The Sea Wall Heritage Trail runs along the one-mile Marine Drive and includes 31 engraved granite viewing panels. Each panel in the “Porthole in Time” series tells part of Scarborough’s rich and varied history. The panels also make the route a walk with historical insights, rather than simply a waterside connection.
Historic Railway and Current Planning
The Cliff Lift is Britain’s oldest cliff railway; it first opened in 1875. In August 2026, North Yorkshire Council decided to close it immediately after an independent technical inspection identified several problems with the ageing infrastructure. If you’re considering a ride, check its current status before your trip.
Scarborough offers different scales for your stay: from the approximately 30-minute walk between the bays, to paths and gardens, and a 21-mile route to Whitby. Museums, theatres and the documented experiences in its parks and gardens complement the coastal attractions.
