Wykeham combines a regular weekly market day with traces of different periods of architectural history. For active pursuits, North Yorkshire Water Park offers a lakeside walking route, three fishing lakes and other activities. The different themes provide a range of points to consider when planning: a specific date, a route of a set length or an activity with a clearly defined duration.

Walking Route, Fishing Lakes and Activities

The Cycling and Walking track at North Yorkshire Water Park is a 2.5-kilometre loop along the lakeshore. The path has a gravel surface and is suitable for a range of terrains. In addition to its lakeside setting, it offers views of the nearby landscape; nature and nesting birds are also part of its appeal. The route’s length, surface and scenery offer different aspects to consider when deciding whether it is right for you.

There are three lakes for anglers: Coarse Lake, Trout Lake and Predator Lake. Together, they cover more than 10 acres. Their three names and total area give a clear overview of what is on offer, without reducing the lakes to a single fishing area.

Laser tag takes place in the immersive woodland setting of Adventure Wood. A session lasts one hour and includes four to five rounds of team-based play. Its fixed duration makes it easy to distinguish this activity time-wise from a visit to the walking route or lakes.

The Aqua Parks can be booked by the general public on weekends and during school holidays. If you plan to include this activity, check availability for your chosen date before travelling. This lets you take the stated booking periods into account when planning.

Friday Market in Wykeham

Wykeham Village Market takes place every Friday from 8 am to 12 pm in the Hillyard car park, opposite the Downe Arms in Wykeham. Its regular morning hours make the market a clear reference point for planning your day. If you are making a special trip for it, confirm the market hours before setting off so you can take its weekly schedule into account.

Priory and Country House: Two Architectural Histories

Wykeham Priory was founded around 1153 with a gift from Pain de Wykeham and dissolved in 1540. The north wall is the only surviving above-ground part of the church. The surviving remains preserve important information about the form of the priory church and its building phases. This brings together two distinct historical reference points: the dates place the priory’s history in context, while the wall preserves clues about the church’s construction and development.

Wykeham Abbey is a separate building type: it is a country house dating from the mid-18th century. Its ground floor has a Doric loggia dated to 1839. Here, a general description of the country house sits alongside a precise year for one architectural detail. Those interested in architectural history can thus find both a broader timeframe and a precisely dated building feature.
