Pateley Bridge is the only small town within the Nidderdale National Landscape. Highlights for your trip include the River Nidd corridor, a one-mile circular walk, the far-reaching Nidderdale Way, as well as a museum and theatre. This means there is a lot to explore, from nature and recreation to local history and performances. If you are looking for a hotel in Pateley Bridge, these different highlights can help you decide what kind of trip you want: would you like to focus mainly on the museum, a shorter walking option or a longer landscape trail?

River corridor and trails

Millennium Green and Recreation Ground in Pateley Bridge form a public open space on both sides of the River Nidd, managed for conservation and recreation. The Pateley Bridge Millennium Green Trail is a 1-mile (1.6-kilometre) circular walk. Features along the route include a wild garden, a wildlife pond, a BMX track and a children's play area. The route brings together features for both nature and recreation.

The Nidderdale Way is a 53-mile circular route that covers the whole of the Nidderdale National Landscape. It follows riverside and field paths, crosses moorland and, in places, runs along roads through villages. In terms of length, the 1-mile Millennium Green Trail is very different from the 53-mile Nidderdale Way. The types of paths also vary, and ground conditions can change with the weather. If you are planning to walk the Nidderdale Way, take these changes in trail conditions into account.

The Pateley Bridge & Glasshouses Loop follows the River Nidd downstream from Pateley Bridge along the route of the former Nidd Valley Railway. Unlike the Nidderdale Way, this walk focuses on the river’s direction and the former railway line. Conditions on this loop can also change; check them before setting out.

Local history at Nidderdale Museum

Nidderdale Museum is housed in a former workhouse in Pateley Bridge. It displays thousands of objects documenting life in the region over the past 200 years, many of them shown in original settings. This gives the collection a broad timespan. For a more specific insight into one working environment, the museum preserves the complete contents of a shoemaker’s workshop dating from 1820. You can explore local history through both a wide range of objects and a complete workshop collection.

Theatre and annual event

The Nidderdale Show takes place every September, and its history can be traced back to 1319. Alongside the museum and landscape, it offers an annual event to plan around. Pateley Playhouse stages immersive productions of classic works and original works in a 72-seat theatre. If an event is the reason for your trip, check the specific September dates for the show or the theatre’s schedule in advance.
