Church, Hall and traces of history

The Church of All Saints brings together architectural features from different periods. Its tower dates from the 11th century, while the nave and chancel were built in 1860. The church also contains a 9th-century Anglian cross shaft carved in high relief and a 10th-century wheel cross. These two crosses give a visit its own historical focus alongside the building’s architectural history.

Hovingham Hall also has a distinctive architectural feature: the entrance leads through a large riding school, reached from the village street through a large archway. The Hall’s gardens include a 17th-century dovecote. A Roman villa was also excavated on the site in 1745. A tessellated floor, a bath and a hypocaust were uncovered; no visible surface remains of the villa are present today.

In 2027, pre-booked group visits to Hovingham Hall are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with arrivals from 10:00 a.m. The visit includes a personal tour of the Hall, refreshments and time afterwards to explore the gardens independently. Please check the information again before booking. If you require wheelchair access, bear in mind that it is limited to a small part of the ground floor and the gardens at the Hall.

Circular walks and village activities

Three circular walks start in Hovingham. The Purple Route is rated easy and offers a main route of 6.7 kilometres and an extended option of 7.7 kilometres. The Blue Route is moderate and 7.5 kilometres long. You can therefore weigh up the published lengths and difficulty ratings: the main Purple Route is shorter, while its extended option is slightly longer than the Blue Route. Trail conditions can change, so take this into account when planning.

Another activity in the village is the Hovingham Community Playground, an adventure playground with play equipment for everyone from toddlers to teenagers. This makes it a separate option alongside the church, Hall and walks, without requiring a particular theme for your outing.

Market days in Hovingham

Organised by village volunteers, the Hovingham Village Market serves Hovingham and the neighbouring region. It takes place on the first Saturday of each month from February to December.
