Welshampton – Walks and Historic Traces
Accommodation in Welshampton
In Welshampton, walks, a cycling route, and historic sites offer practical starting points for planning your trip. The walking routes are particularly easy to compare by length and duration. They are joined by St Michael’s Church, a grave in Welshampton, and a well-preserved prehistoric monument. This lets you choose the focus of your stay without combining walking, cycling, and history into a single outing.
On foot: two different routes
Walk 1 runs from Welshampton via Hampton Bank through fields and along the canal. The route uses tracks, paths, and farm tracks, includes seven stiles, and is about 3½ miles long. The stated duration is approximately 1½ hours. Conditions on the ground can vary, so allow some flexibility rather than treating the duration as an exact walking time.
Walk 5 runs from Welshampton via Ellesmere through fields and woods, also using tracks and paths. At about 8ÂĽ miles, it is considerably longer, and takes more than four hours. The route has 23 stiles and can be muddy. In terms of time, Walk 1 is the shorter option, while Walk 5 takes up a much larger part of the day. The length and stated duration therefore give you concrete points of comparison for planning.
Both routes pass through different landscapes: Walk 1 combines fields with a stretch along the canal, while Walk 5 runs through fields and woods. When choosing between them, you can take these described landscape features into account as well as the time involved. The number of stiles also differs considerably: seven on Walk 1 and 23 on Walk 5.
Cycling route and canal
For a bike ride, there is Wem Cycle Rides Route 2 to Welshampton and Colemere. It is a 16-mile circular route starting from Wem. This makes it different from the two walks: the starting point and circular route are specified, as are the two places along the route. Route information can change, so check the current route before setting off.
The Llangollen Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal passes less than a mile from the village. This is a separate point of reference alongside the route details: Walk 1 runs along the canal, while the distance from the village to the canal branch is described separately.
Church and historic traces
St Michael’s Church in Welshampton was built in 1863. St Michael’s & All Angels has a walled churchyard with mature trees and offers views across the countryside to the west. A short detour to the church in Welshampton also takes you to the grave of Moshushoe, which can be found there. These places give your stay a historical focus distinct from the available routes.
The bowl barrow near Old Shop Farm is also part of the area’s historic landscape. It is an exceptionally well-preserved example of its monument class. This gives you another, different kind of monument to include in your trip planning, alongside the church building and the grave.
Plan your stay
If you are looking for a hotel in Welshampton, you can start by considering whether walking, cycling, or historic sites will be the focus of your trip. The two walks differ clearly in length and time required; the cycling route is described as a circular route starting from Wem. Parking for the walks is available at Welshampton Parish Hall. Check local rules before relying on this.
