Oswestry brings together archaeological evidence, religious history and railway attractions. When looking for a hotel in Oswestry, it may help to decide in advance which of these aspects are important to your stay. The Oswestry Town Museum brings together finds from several periods; Old Oswestry Hillfort illustrates several phases of development and settlement, while the castle reveals two distinct periods of construction. St Oswald’s Church has a long history as a place of worship. The railway is another attraction in its own right. This lets you plan your stay around specific interests.

Museum, church and castle: different periods

The Oswestry Town Museum has a free exhibition of locally excavated finds. It includes evidence from the Stone Age, as well as the Roman, Viking and Tudor periods. This brings together very different historical periods in a single exhibition. The “Timeline” is also a central feature of the main exhibition room. The “Timeline” is an ongoing project intended to show the history of the town, from the formation of the rocks to present-day Oswestry. The chronological range of the finds therefore differs from the Timeline’s wide-ranging narrative: the finds are associated with particular periods, while the Timeline aims to chart a progression from geological origins to the present day.

St Oswald’s Church has been a place of worship for almost 1,000 years. In contrast to the finds from individual periods brought together in the museum, the church’s history is defined by the continuity of worship over almost a millennium. Oswestry Castle can also be placed in two distinct periods. The remains are the ruins of a 13th-century stone castle built on a motte dating from the late 11th century. These two dates highlight the time separating the older motte from the later stone castle.

Old Oswestry Hillfort and the landscape

Old Oswestry Hillfort stands on a glacial hill north of Oswestry and offers far-reaching views to the west, north and east. Two complex entrances illustrate several phases in the hillfort’s development and settlement. Here, a distinctive landscape setting combines with evidence of the site’s historical development.

Railways in Oswestry

Passenger trains run from Oswestry railway station to Weston Wharf along a 1½-mile route. Visitor facilities on the Oswestry–Weston Wharf railway include the main café, shop, ticket office and waiting room at the station. A short section of the Cambrian Heritage Railways is also in operation in Oswestry; trains are hauled by steam or diesel locomotives. This gives railway enthusiasts two specific points of interest: the named passenger train journey to Weston Wharf and the steam or diesel traction on the short section in Oswestry. Operating days may vary, and visitor information can also change. Check the timetable and details of the facilities before travelling.
