Bridgnorth lies on the River Severn, and steep sandstone cliffs are also part of its townscape. The river divides the town into High Town and Low Town. Castle remains, Northgate Museum and the Bridgnorth Cliff Railway offer tangible cultural and historical points of interest for a visit. If you are looking for a hotel in Bridgnorth, these different themes can help you understand the character of the destination in line with your interests.

A townscape between river and cliffs

The River Severn divides Bridgnorth into High Town and Low Town. Its riverside location and steep sandstone cliffs also shape the town’s basic geography. The Bridgnorth Cliff Railway carries people between the two parts of town over the sandstone cliffs beside the River Severn. This gives you two distinct points of reference: the river divides the town, while the railway carries people between High Town and Low Town.

Bridgnorth Castle and the Castle Walk

Bridgnorth Castle comprises the remains of a Norman keep and the buried remains of the inner courtyard. The site therefore includes both surviving structural remains and traces lying underground. The surviving keep is approximately 20 metres high and leans 17 degrees to the east. Its height and tilt describe different features: how far the tower rises and the direction in which it leans. Bridgnorth Castle is designated a Scheduled Monument. The Castle Walk leads from the upper station of the Bridgnorth Cliff Railway to the Bridgnorth Castle site.

Northgate Museum and local history

Northgate Museum is dedicated to the history of Bridgnorth and the surrounding area. It is located above Northgate, at the northern end of High Street. The museum houses more than 5,000 historical objects from Bridgnorth and the surrounding region; the collection may continue to grow. The cultural and historical focus differs: Bridgnorth Castle centres on structural and archaeological remains, while Northgate Museum covers the history of Bridgnorth and its surroundings.

Rail connections and market days

The Bridgnorth Cliff Railway opened on 7 July 1892 and is still in operation. As operating hours may change, check the current timetable before travelling. At Bridgnorth railway station, an elevated steel bridge connects the station with the town. From the platform and footbridge, you can look out over the Severn Valley Railway’s locomotive workshops. This station view of the workshops differs from the change of town level on the Cliff Railway: one perspective is from the station, while the other connects High Town and Low Town.

Market days also take place in different locations and on different days of the week. A weekly market is held along Bridgnorth High Street on Saturdays; there is a small market beneath the Town Hall on Fridays. If a market is important to your plans, check the current dates before your visit, as market times may change.
