Burley Gate: Village Character, History and Paths
Accommodation in Burley Gate
Burley Gate is characterised by a linear settlement along a gentle ridge. The main built-up section runs along the A465; eastwards, the village continues along the C1133 towards Bishops Frome. These road connections provide practical orientation for planning your trip. The village’s architectural history and the paths offered by the surrounding communities also provide starting points for planning your stay.
Architectural History and Village Character
The former Burley Gate Inn is a Grade II listed building. It features architectural elements from the Tudor, Georgian and Victorian periods. Today, the former inn is a private residence; it closed as an inn in 1990. By 1819 at the latest, it was known as the Mason’s Arms. Its building phases and history of names thus tell different chapters of the village’s past.
The former blacksmith’s forge is also part of Burley Gate’s history. For several centuries, it was a landmark on the main road to Hereford; the building was later demolished. The remains of an older timber-framed house came to light during the demolition. Another historical connection is to the drovers: their alternative route ran from Burley Gate through Much Cowarne and on to Bishops Frome to avoid toll restrictions.
Community Facilities and Paths
Burley Gate Village Hall is on the A465 between the Burley Gate roundabout and Stoke Lacy. The Community Shop is located in the Village Hall; Burley Gate Post Office is inside the shop. The Community Shop, Village Hall and Primary School were established for use by the surrounding communities. Refreshments are available at the Community Shop. Check the range and opening hours separately.
For planning walks, the communities of Much Cowarne and Moreton Jeffries have 31 kilometres of signposted and waymarked paths open to the public. Large-scale maps of these walking areas are located beside Burley Gate Post Office. The maps provide a practical reference for planning your route; path conditions may change seasonally. Check them before setting out.
