When looking for a hotel in Swansea, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your trip first. In Swansea, museums, exhibitions and historic buildings take centre stage; on Gower, coastal landscapes, walking trails and surfing opportunities shape your options. There are also bus connections and a range of ways to get to Swansea Bay. Consider whether you mainly want to experience culture, explore specific landscapes or plan outdoor activities.

Museums and historic sites in Swansea

The National Waterfront Museum tells the story of industry and innovation in Wales, from the present day back over the past 300 years. It presents industrial and maritime heritage using both interactive technology and traditional exhibitions. This brings different ways of interpreting the past together: you can focus on historic artefacts or explore the interactive features.

The main building of Swansea Museum has six galleries. Objects on display there include an Egyptian mummy and a Welsh kitchen. The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery offers free community activities, workshops and events. As public programmes can change, check the dates for your visit in advance.

Historic buildings also offer their own points of interest. Oystermouth Castle in Mumbles is a Grade I-listed Norman building and is also designated as an Ancient Monument. Access arrangements can change, so check them before your visit. Mumbles Pier is a Victorian pleasure pier that opened in 1898. If you are interested in architectural history, this offers a different focus from the museums’ collections and exhibitions.

Swansea Market is also part of the local offering, with a selection of fresh, locally sourced produce available throughout the year.

Gower: coast, trails and landscapes

Gower was the first place in Britain to be designated a National Landscape. The Gower National Landscape encompasses cliffs, woodland and beaches. Along the Gower Coast Path, broad golden beaches, dramatic cliffs, salt marshes and sand dunes alternate. This gives you a variety of landscapes to shape your plans for an outdoor stay around.

Rhossili Bay has three miles of golden sand. Another destination strongly influenced by the tides is Pen Pyrod (Worm’s Head): it is accessible on foot only for two hours before and after low tide. Check the current tides before making plans. For your schedule, this fixed timing is more important than a general description of the route; the time window determines when access is possible.

If you want to take in historic features as well as the landscape, consider the Gower Way. It passes ancient cairns, standing stones, Norman castles and chapels. Landscape and architectural history also come together on the coast: Three Cliffs Bay is overlooked by the ruins of Pennard Castle. Llangennith, meanwhile, is considered one of the best surfing spots in Wales for experienced surfers, thanks to its reliable waves. The Gower’s attractions therefore vary by interest, from landscapes and walking trails to historic sites along the way and surfing.

Getting here and getting around

Swansea Bay can be reached by car, train, coach, sea or plane. An extensive network of local buses serves Swansea, Mumbles and Gower. Check routes and timetables before travelling so you can plan around the services for your specific destinations.

Swansea Bay has several traffic-free cycle paths, and the region is also connected to the Celtic Trail and the National Cycle Network. This means you can include cycle routes and network connections in your travel plans. Walking and cycling offer different ways to explore: the Gower Coast Path focuses on coastal landscapes, while the cycle routes mentioned provide another way to structure your trip.
