Merthyr Tydfil: Nature, Trails and Industrial Heritage
Accommodation in Merthyr Tydfil
Merthyr Tydfil combines outdoor experiences with a rich industrial history. Notable destinations include a wooded limestone gorge, a reservoir, mountain bike trails, and places where railway and industrial history come to life. You can plan your time around a wide range of interests—from outdoor activities to museums and cultural attractions.
Landscape, park and mountain bike trails
The registered Cyfarthfa Park covers 65 hectares above Merthyr Tydfil and is listed as a Grade II* park. Cyfarthfa Castle is a castle-like Grade I listed residence. It was built in 1824 for ironmaster William Crawshay II. The castle houses a museum and art gallery featuring art, social history and unusual objects, including the world’s first steam whistle.
BikePark Wales is located in Gethin Woodland above Merthyr Tydfil. The trails vary by difficulty: green and blue trails are designed for beginners and steady riding, while red and black trails are more technically challenging. The five-kilometre Kermit is a dedicated beginners’ trail. This lets you distinguish between a route specifically designated for beginners and the different trail grades when considering the options.
Reservoir, water activities and gorge
Completed in 1927, Pontsticill Reservoir was built to supply water to communities across South Wales. The Taff Trail runs directly in front of its dam. As part of the Reservoir Passport Scheme, visitors can go canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding there. This means you can plan water activities and routes by the reservoir alongside learning about the structure’s history; choose a particular activity to suit your itinerary.
Taf Fechan Nature Reserve includes a 2.5-kilometre wooded limestone gorge carved by the River Taf Fechan. The reserve lies beside the Taff Trail and includes a large part of the Cwm Taf Fechan Woodlands, designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. A circular trail through the gorge leads to the Blue Pool, a waterfall and a clear pool. Compared with the reservoir, it offers a different kind of outdoor experience: water activities at the reservoir and a route through a wooded gorge.
Much of the Taff Trail is traffic-free and suitable for walking, cycling and horse riding. You can also choose a section of the trail based on your preferred way of getting around. The Trevithick Trail starts in the centre of Merthyr Tydfil and combines industrial history with river landscapes, woodland paths and public art. It follows a mix of traffic-free paths, cycleways and quiet roads.
Railway history and historic sites
The Brecon Mountain Railway uses part of the original route of the Brecon to Merthyr railway, built in 1859. It reaches Torpantau at the summit of the original line, 1,313 feet above sea level. On the return journey, the train stops at Pontsticill station, where you can visit the Lakeside Cafe and walk along the reservoir. If you’re planning a railway trip, check the timetable for your visit.
Other places also tell the story of the region. Morlais Castle was built around 1270 by Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Lord of Glamorgan. Visitors can explore its remains and the vaulted underground cellar. The hill offers views across the Taf Fechan valley and surrounding landscape. The Trevithick Tunnel, meanwhile, is thought to be the world’s oldest railway tunnel built for self-propelled steam locomotives on rails; it was constructed for the original journey of a steam locomotive.
Joseph Parry’s Cottage is a preserved 19th-century ironworker’s house at Number 4 Chapel Row. Inside, visitors can explore rooms furnished as they would have been in the 1840s. Theatr Soar is located in Pontmorlais in the centre of Merthyr Tydfil and can be reached on foot, by bus, train or car. Its stage brings amateur and professional performers together with audiences. Regular offerings include performances and community and professional activities. In the town centre, you’ll also find international cuisines alongside traditional Welsh specialities.
