Porthmadog offers several distinct starting points for a stay: narrow-gauge railway journeys, the history of the harbour and routes through the town. When looking for a hotel, it can help to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: a train journey, maritime history or time spent exploring Porthmadog on foot.

Narrow-gauge railways and different journeys

The Ffestiniog Railway offers a journey along its entire route from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog. The Harbourmaster also offers a full-day steam train journey on the Welsh Highland Railway from Porthmadog Harbour Station to Caernarfon and back. The two options have different planning considerations: the Ffestiniog Railway journey focuses on the entire route to Blaenau Ffestiniog; for the Welsh Highland Railway, the full-day duration and the return journey to Caernarfon are the key reference points. If you are considering your available time, the “full-day” description is useful for the second journey, while the first is described as covering the entire route.

The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway offers a different timeframe: the first part of the visit consists of a ten-minute train ride through the Snowdonia countryside. The train stops at Gelert’s Farm halt, where passengers can take a guided tour of the facilities. In addition, the miniature railway runs around the locomotive sheds and through the woods. The visit thus includes a short train ride through the countryside, a stop with an optional guided tour, and a ride on the miniature railway. Operating details may vary depending on the timetable; check the information for your planned date before visiting.

Arriving and getting around town

Porthmadog is one of the stations on the Cambrian Coast line between Machynlleth and Pwllheli. The station is also a useful reference point for finding your way after arriving: the town centre is about a one-minute walk along High Street. This time may vary depending on the route and conditions. The Wales Coast Path can also be reached from the station via High Street and through the town; the route is 0.6 miles or 1.0 kilometres on foot. Both directions therefore have the same starting point and mention the same street, but have different destinations and measurements: for the town centre, the distance is given as an approximate walking time, while for the Wales Coast Path, the distance to walk is specified. This makes it easy to distinguish between the short walk into the centre and the route to the Coast Path when planning to explore on foot after arriving.

Harbour and maritime history

Porthmadog Maritime Museum is housed in the last remaining slate shed at the harbour. Its collection illustrates the development of the harbour, shipbuilding, ships and the lives of seafarers. The topics range from the development of the harbour and shipbuilding to ships and the people who worked at sea. Visitors with a particular interest in maritime history will find several closely related topics in the collection. The museum also has a dedicated area with activities for children. When visiting with children, this dedicated area is a specific part of the museum’s offering, alongside the collection’s themes.

Townscape and outdoor activities

Another local landmark is The Cob in Porthmadog: the one-mile-long causeway runs across the estuary. As a striking structure, it adds a connection to the estuary to the railway and museum themes. Porthmadog is a good base for walkers and cyclists; LĂ´n Ardudwy is also recommended as a route for cyclists. These details will appeal to travellers who want to include outdoor activities in their stay, alongside train journeys or a visit to the museum. LĂ´n Ardudwy can be included in your plans as a cycling route in its own right, without confusing it with any of the routes through the town described above.
