Aberaeron combines a townscape shaped by Georgian architecture with a tidal harbour and paths along the river and coast. This gives you a choice of different experiences when deciding where to go: the harbour and architecture give the town its character, while walking and cycling routes follow the waterfront, the coast and the route to Llanerchaeron. The town is on the A487 coastal road between Aberystwyth and Cardigan.

Harbour, Coast and Townscape

Aberaeron is predominantly a Georgian-style town; its striking, simple classical architecture is another defining feature. In the sheltered inner harbour, known as “Pwll Cam”, the changing tides shape the scene: at low tide, the harbour basin empties almost completely. The inner and outer harbours have a sailing tradition. Aberaeron South Beach, a rocky and shingle beach, lies south of the town and harbour.

On Foot and by Bike

A step-free route runs along the waterfront between the harbour, the town’s car parks and the playing fields. Upstream from Aberaeron, a pleasant, similarly step-free path follows the River Aeron. Bluebells bloom in spring along this path by the Panteg woods; wildlife there includes fish and herons.

A 2.5-mile route from Aberaeron to Llanerchaeron follows a former railway line and can be used on foot or by bike. The Allt y Graig Woodland Trail connects to the walking and cycling path on Aberaeron’s former railway line, which leads to the Llanerchaeron Estate.

The Ceredigion Coast Path also offers two sections to compare. The 3.1-kilometre section from Aberaeron to Aberarth is rated easy. The 11.9-kilometre section to Llanrhystud runs mostly along soft cliffs and coastal plains. When planning the longer section, also take into account the continuing coastal erosion.

Culture and Local Events

Gallery Gwyn presents contemporary art in four gallery spaces. The Aberaeron Town Trail leads to plaques with short stories about buildings and landmarks. While Gallery Gwyn showcases contemporary art, the Town Trail draws attention to the stories behind the town’s buildings and landmarks.
