Yeovil – Nature, Art and History
Accommodation in Yeovil
Yeovil brings together green spaces, arts and cultural offerings, a long market tradition and historic buildings. If you are looking for a hotel in Yeovil, planning your day’s activities can help you shape your stay: would you like to include walks through woods and meadows, explore arts offerings or follow historical trails? The town’s attractions each have a different focus and can help you structure your stay around your interests.
Green Spaces and Paths
Yeovil Country Park includes woods, waterfalls, meadows and far-reaching views of the surrounding landscape. Ninesprings offers a network of well-maintained footpaths through ancient, semi-natural woodland, wildflower meadows and the Valley Gardens. A quieter area of Yeovil Country Park lies between the River Yeo and the railway line. It has footpaths, a small reed bed and flood meadows. Far-reaching views, woodland paths and wetlands offer different natural features to consider when planning your stay.
Town History and Culture
The South Somerset Heritage Collection includes 30,000 objects and 6,000 photographs documenting the history of Yeovil and South Somerset. It also operates a museum store with accredited museum status. For your planning, it is important to note that the collection is currently closed to the public. Before visiting, check whether its visitor status has changed.
In the town centre, the Historic Plaque Trail uses blue plaques on buildings to explain their historical significance. The Church of St John the Baptist was probably rebuilt by William Wynford between 1380 and 1400. The church also houses a remarkable 15th-century brass lectern. Yeovil’s history extends beyond individual buildings: from the 14th century, the town and surrounding region were a centre of the glove industry. The last factory associated with this industry closed in 2023.
Markets and Local Offerings
Markets are held in Yeovil twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays from 09:00 to 15:00. The market has an 800-year history: King John granted the market charter in 1205. Offerings include stalls selling locally made, homemade bread, as well as cheese pies and pasties; what individual stalls stock may vary. If you are planning a market visit, check the current schedule before travelling.
Art and Events
Yeovil Art Space offers arts and cultural activities for all ages, including participatory events, learning workshops and exhibitions. The main gallery and shop are at Unit 13-15, Vicarage Walk, in the Quedam Shopping Centre, opposite Primark and next to Pandora Jewellery.
The Octagon Theatre is currently closed and is being redeveloped into a major centre for the creative arts. While it is closed, all events and activities are taking place at its sister venue, Westlands Entertainment Venue in Yeovil. If you want to attend a particular event, check before travelling.
