Clatworthy Reservoir lies on the edge of Exmoor National Park, in the Brendon Hills in West Somerset. It shapes the nature and leisure activities available during a stay in Clatworthy: the circular walking trail, woodland nature trail, fishing, seasonal wildlife and historic sites appeal to different interests. When looking for a hotel in Clatworthy, you might consider whether you’d prefer to combine your trip with longer walks, wildlife watching or the area’s heritage.

Reservoir and Nature

The reservoir covers 130 acres and reaches a depth of up to 96 feet. Area and depth describe two different dimensions of the reservoir. Ancient woodland surrounds the water. A walking guide published in 2025 names beech, oak, birch and rowan as the predominant trees in Clatworthy Woods. Various wildflowers, bat and bird species, and more than 1,000 invertebrate species can be found at the reservoir. Wildlife sightings are seasonal; if wildlife is important to your trip, take the time of year into account when planning.

At the reservoir there is a rock face designated as an LGS, featuring an outcrop of Devonian Morte Slates; public access to the rock face is not guaranteed.

Trails and Fishing

There is a five-mile circular walking trail at the reservoir, as well as a shorter woodland nature trail. A walking guide dated 8 September 2025 describes the circular route from the dam into Clatworthy Woods and through the Life for a Life Memorial Forest. This gives you the choice of a longer loop or a shorter, woodland-focused route. Check local conditions before setting out.

Fishing is possible at Clatworthy Reservoir from the shore or from a boat. The fish stocked include rainbow trout and brown trout. If fishing is part of your travel plans, check the current fishing conditions before you arrive, as they may change.

Historic Sites and Church Services

Clatworthy hillfort stands at the upper end of a long ridge and overlooks Clatworthy Reservoir. It is also known locally as “Clatworthy Camp or Castle”. The site is protected as a Scheduled Monument. Its location and name give the hillfort a clear connection to the landscape and its historic heritage.

The Church of St Mary Magdalene is a Grade II* listed building. The Churchyard Cross stands in the churchyard, about 12 metres south of the chancel. It may date from the 14th century and stands on a later base. According to the official service schedule as of 1 September 2026, a Holy Communion service takes place at 10 am on the second Sunday of each month. A Morning Prayer service is scheduled for 10 am on the fourth Sunday. If you plan to attend either service, check the schedule before you arrive.
