Walking and route planning

The Wessex Ridgeway Farm Walks extend for 12 miles (18 km). You can plan using whichever unit of measurement you are familiar with and consider the distance as a concrete figure for your walking plans. As local conditions can change, check them before setting off. This makes it possible to include walking as a distinct focus in your trip planning.

Church and archaeological traces

The Parish Church of St Pancras is a Grade II* listed building. The church also contains a medieval cresset stone, an early form of lighting. The church building and this single furnishing offer different perspectives on the local heritage.

On the south side of Church Hill in Alton Pancras, three small, approximately circular mounds are visible as low earthworks. They are 7 to 10 metres wide and may be Bronze Age round barrows. It is important to distinguish between the visible evidence and its possible dating: the Bronze Age attribution remains a possibility.

The field system and settlement on Watcombe Plain are designated as Scheduled Monument DO 759. The archaeological evidence therefore differs from the individual mounds: here, it comprises a field system and a settlement. This offers an opportunity to consider different types of archaeological earthworks, for those with an interest in archaeology.

Manor House: building history and details

The Manor House in Alton Pancras is also a Grade II* listed building. It was extensively remodelled for Thomas Harkett from 1730 to 1744, with further alterations in 1760. The two dates mark separate phases in the building's history and show that the remodelling did not take place at a single point in time.

The Manor House drawing room features Gothic decoration, a style not often found in Dorset. The gate piers at the house date from around 1740. They are made of rusticated stone and have moulded cornices and garland urns with foliage finials. Alongside the house's development over time, these are specific details of its interior decoration and gateway.

The probable icehouse south of the manor is a partly underground vaulted chamber. Part of it was used for cider-making. About 20 metres south of Alton Pancras Manor House are the late 18th-century stables: a single-storey building with an attic. The icehouse and stables add different building types and details of use to the building history.

Plan your stay around your interests

When planning your trip, you can weigh walking and history separately. The Wessex Ridgeway Farm Walks have a stated route length; the historical themes focus on individual buildings, their history and archaeological evidence. There is also a distinction within the heritage: the Manor House's building phases are dated, while the Bronze Age attribution of the mounds is possible but not certain.
