Porthleven combines an active fishing harbour with a long maritime history: for centuries, the harbour has provided refuge for ships in distress. The main buildings around the harbour have changed little since the late 19th century. Today’s fishing activity therefore sits alongside a harbour that has remained largely unchanged over time.

Harbour, history and local culture

The Porthleven Town Trail takes in 13 stops around the harbour. It is available through a free smartphone app. A companion booklet costs £1 and is available from various shops in Porthleven. Please note that availability and distribution details may change.

The upper floors of the Salt Cellar house craft workshops. Visitors can watch local craftspeople at work there, including a hatmaker and a basket weaver. Please check before your visit whether this is currently possible.

The old lifeboat house at the outer harbour is now used as an art gallery and can be hired for exhibitions, workshops and events. Please check availability before planning a visit or a hire. The Customs House Gallery is located on the historic harbour side and displays original works by artists from Cornwall; exhibitions and artists may change.

A community-run, non-profit food festival takes place around the harbour each year. Dates and programme may change. If you would like to plan your trip around it, please check the information for your intended travel dates.

Coast and conditions by the water

Porthleven Beach stretches three miles east from the historic harbour, combining golden sand with a steeply shelving shingle beach. Shore conditions can change. At low tide, visitors can walk along the shore towards Loe Bar. Please check the tide and local conditions before setting out.

Swimming at Porthleven Beach is not recommended because of the rough and dangerous sea; coastal conditions remain variable. The Porthleven Reef Break surf spot should be used only by experienced surfers. Please note: weather and swell affect conditions, and local safety requirements may also vary.

Much of the coast around Porthleven is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or is cared for by the National Trust.
