Discover Gweek: Nature, River and Heritage
Accommodation in Gweek
Gweek brings together wildlife, river activities and a diverse historic heritage. The range of highlights is useful when planning your trip: the Cornish Seal Sanctuary offers wildlife encounters and insights into seal rescue, while trips on the Helford River require careful planning around the tides. The area also features archaeological monuments and a listed church building. This mix can help you match Gweek’s highlights to your travel interests.
Nature and wildlife on the Helford River
At the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek, visitors can see marine animals up close and learn about their individual stories. Guests can also visit the working seal rescue hospital and get a behind-the-scenes look at its work. The visit therefore combines encounters with individual marine animals and an insight into rescue work. If you are interested in wildlife encounters and the work of a rescue hospital, this offers a clear focus for planning your trip. Check visitor information in advance, as access conditions may change.
The Sanctuary is located on the upper reaches of the Helford River. The river’s shoreline includes muddy creek landscapes such as Gweek and a wide variety of habitats. Two distinct aspects of nature are therefore represented: individual marine animals and rescue work at the Sanctuary, and creek landscapes and habitats along the shoreline. For travellers particularly interested in riverbanks and habitats, this offers a different perspective from a visit to the Sanctuary.
River trips and tides
Gweek Classic Boatyard offers open canoe and stand-up paddleboard trips on the Helford River. Canoe and paddleboard sessions can be arranged as relaxed river trips or as technique training. This gives you two different options: enjoying the river itself or practising your technique. Day trips set off on the ebb tide and return on the flood tide. They must be arranged in advance. Check booking and availability details before your trip.
Archaeological sites and historic buildings
The Tolvan Stone near Tolvan Cross in the parish of Gweek is a Scheduled Monument. It is a rare surviving and remarkable example of a holed stone associated with the entrances to megalithic portal tombs. This makes it a distinctive example of Gweek’s archaeological heritage.
Another Scheduled Monument is the oval enclosure “Round 260m south of Tenament Farm”. It survives on a steep hillside, is approximately 66 metres long and 60 metres wide, and overlooks the Helford estuary near Gweek. These approximate measurements indicate the extent of the oval enclosure; its hillside setting and view over the estuary give it a distinctive place in the landscape.
Gweek Methodist Church adds a listed building to these archaeological examples. It is a Grade II listed building and was first listed in this category on 17 June 1988. Gweek’s historic heritage therefore encompasses both archaeological sites and a church building.
