Accommodation in Midsomer Norton
Midsomer Norton offers a range of themes for your stay: listed buildings, Town Park, an audio walk along the High Street and the Somerset & Dorset Railway. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can plan your visit around the specific places and attractions.
Buildings and local history
The Parish Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade II* listed building. Midsomer Norton Town Hall is also listed, at Grade II. It was built in 1860 in the Italian style.
The Church of the Holy Ghost is a Roman Catholic parish church in a converted tithe barn. The Midsomer Norton Knight offers a different perspective: this rare tomb effigy was apparently made in Bristol in the 14th century. Together, a church in a repurposed building and a tomb effigy with its own story of origin offer different ways to explore local history.
The Garden of Friendship, beside the old tithe barn, was made accessible as part of public realm improvements. Alongside the buildings and tomb effigy, the design of public spaces and this garden are also part of the town’s cultural and historical attractions.
Town Park and walking routes
Midsomer Norton Town Park has an amphitheatre made of Purbeck stone, with seating for 300 people around the stage. The park also has a riverside walking path and connects to the Five Arches Greenway.
These features offer different points to consider when planning: the amphitheatre is a seating area with a specific capacity, while the walking path and Greenway connection define the park’s routes. You can decide whether you’d rather focus on the stage and its seating or the riverside path during your visit.
Audio walk and leisure activities
The self-guided audio walk “The Myths and Memories of Midsomer Norton High Street” visits twelve notable locations along the High Street. Its route runs from St John’s Church in the southwest to Town Park in the northeast. The twelve locations and named endpoints give the tour a clear connection to the High Street and a straightforward direction through the town.
Dynamite Adventure Golf offers a themed 18-hole adventure golf experience in a coal mine. Midsomer Norton Skatepark is large, made of concrete and includes a bowl and a plaza area. The differences lie in the specific features: the coal mine theme shapes the 18-hole golf experience, while the skatepark is defined by its construction and division into two areas.
Somerset & Dorset Railway
The Somerset & Dorset Railway runs from Midsomer Norton South station along more than a mile of the former Somerset & Dorset main line. The site also has a Second World War Anderson shelter. Here, the railway history of the former main line and a specific wartime shelter come together. Operating days may vary, so check the timetable before your visit.
