When planning a trip to Funtington, there are several interests to consider: church architecture, prehistory and local food. These include the Parish Church of St Mary in Funtington, Sennicotts St Mary's and the Itford Hill settlement in the parish of Funtington. Adsdean Farm Shop adds farm-produced meat as another topic; the flint mine on Stoke Down is a separate archaeological point of interest. If you are looking for a hotel, it may be helpful to decide in advance which interests will shape your plans.

Church architecture and history

The Parish Church of St Mary in Funtington is a Grade II* listed building. Its north nave arcade dates from the 13th century. This distinguishes the building’s listed status from the dating of its structure: the designation applies to the church, while the century refers to a particular feature. An arcade is a series of arches; “north” locates it within the nave.

Sennicotts St Mary's is also known as Sennicotts Chapel. The church was recently renovated with careful restoration of its original details, including the pink “pig’s blood” shade of the walls. While the arcade in Funtington identifies a dated architectural feature, the focus here is on restored design and colour. A separate historical event concerns Sennicotts Church: in 1829, Charles Baker applied to build it.

Archaeological monuments

The flint mine on Stoke Down is a Scheduled Monument. The site comprises at least 70 roughly circular pits, up to 9 m in diameter. The minimum number and maximum diameter indicate different limits: not every pit has to measure 9 m, and the number may exceed 70. This puts the measurements in context without suggesting that all the pits have the same diameter.

The Itford Hill settlement in Kingley Vale, in the parish of Funtington, dates from the Late Bronze Age, the 10th to 8th centuries BC. It includes at least five roughly circular and semicircular banked enclosures, ranging from 8 to 30 m in diameter. The focus here is on the settlement’s date and the shapes and measurements of its enclosures. In contrast to the flint mine, whose details refer to the number and maximum diameter of pits, Itford Hill is described as a settlement with several enclosures.
