If you are considering Betchworth as a destination for a stay, you can focus your interests on two main themes: industrial and architectural history, and the North Downs countryside. Local highlights include the lime kilns at Betchworth Quarry, Betchworth Castle, St Michael’s Church and the chalk upland landscape. Annual events add recurring dates to the picture of the village. This makes it easier to decide before your trip whether historic buildings, countryside or an event experience should be your main focus.

Lime Kilns, Castle and Church

The lime kilns at Betchworth Quarry include unique surviving examples of Dietzsch and Smidth kilns in Britain. They are part of Betchworth Lime Works, which was operated by the Dorking Greystone Lime Company from 1865 to 1959. Here, a distinctive kiln design is linked to the history of the lime works.

Betchworth Castle preserves extensive standing masonry remains from the medieval period and later building phases. Historical records date back to at least 1377. The history of the site at St Michael’s Church goes back further: a church stood there before the Norman Conquest. The building dates predominantly from the mid-13th century and incorporates fragments from the 11th century. The written reference to the castle, dating back to at least 1377, and the earlier ecclesiastical references therefore provide two different points of historical context.

Chalk Uplands and Walking Routes

Betchworth Quarry is a chalk upland area in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and part of the North Downs. The area is rich in wildflowers, including horseshoe vetch and several species of orchid. Their botanical appeal is seasonal, and the landscape can change over the course of the year.

You can reach the quarry on foot via the North Downs Way through The Coombe in Betchworth. There is no parking at the quarry. As access conditions may change, check local conditions before travelling. Another walking option is the Betchworth & Buckland Nature Trail, which can be walked from St Michael’s Church in Betchworth to the North Downs. The route information differs depending on your starting point and destination: access to the quarry is via The Coombe, while the Nature Trail starts at the church and leads to the North Downs.

Annual Events

The traditional wassailing takes place every January in the orchard in the village of Betchworth. The Cowpie Rally is also held annually and organised by Surrey Young Farmers. Dates and arrangements for the rally may vary; check the latest information if you are planning your trip around it. Wassailing provides a regular seasonal highlight, while you should take the rally’s schedule for each year into account.
