Forest Hill: History and local routes
Accommodation in Forest Hill
If you’re looking for a hotel in Forest Hill, you can plan your stay around specific interests: local highlights range from Milton-related history and architecture to routes and countryside nearby. Forest Hill should be distinguished from the nearby attractions at Shotover and Shotover Country Park. This lets you choose between exploring the village’s history and setting aside a specific amount of time for walks in the surrounding area.
Church and literary history
St Nicholas Church is a Grade II* listed building. John Milton and Mary Powell most likely married there. Another local connection to Milton is Milton’s Stone, near the churchyard: a mounting block that marks John Milton’s connection to Forest Hill. The church and stone therefore point to different aspects of the village’s history—a likely wedding and a named local landmark.
Architecture and garden history
The gateway and flanking walls of Forest Hill House on Main Street form an early 17th-century structure. Nearby, Shotover is an early 18th-century country house with a contemporary formal garden and a landscape park dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. William Kent designed two garden buildings at Shotover in the early 1730s. The gateway on Main Street is therefore older than Shotover house; Kent’s designs date from the early decades of the following century.
The garden’s dimensions also give a tangible sense of its design: Shotover’s formal east garden is part of a 1.2-kilometre-long axis on which the house stands. The grounds also include the 300-metre-long Long Canal. These two measurements describe different features—a long axis and a named canal.
Countryside and routes nearby
Open fields near Forest Hill offer attractive views into and out of the Forest Hill Conservation Area. Nearby, Shotover Country Park covers 117 hectares on the southern slopes of Shotover Hill and offers views across South Oxfordshire. Most of the country park is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The open fields and the views across the county are therefore two distinct features of the landscape.
Shotover Country Park has three waymarked trails. At a leisurely pace, they take about 30 minutes, 45 minutes and 2 hours respectively. For planning your time, the two shorter options—half an hour and three-quarters of an hour—contrast with a considerably longer route of about two hours.
The public bridleway Forest Hill with Shotover Bridleway No. 8 follows a different route. It is legally recorded north of Forest Hill Village Hall and starts at the junction with Footpath No. 9. This identifies both the waymarked routes in the country park and a separate public bridleway near Forest Hill.
