Landscape and nature
At Northward Hill Nature Reserve, miles of paths lead through marshland and hay meadows, through a woodland filled with bluebells in spring, and through a cherry orchard. These landscape features offer different points of interest: alongside paths through marshland and meadows, the woodland has a seasonal display of flowers. Almost 250 pairs of grey herons and little egrets nest in the trees at Northward Hill. The number of breeding pairs can vary from season to season. If you are particularly interested in birds, this breeding population is a specific point of interest alongside the landscapes crossed by the paths. The reserve’s paths and facilities may change, so check the latest information before visiting.
Heritage and local history
Halstow Marshes Decoy Pond is a surviving duck decoy dating from the late 17th century. The structure has two phases and four catching arms. It is also notable in a regional context as the only surviving example of a duck pond in Kent. The diamond-shaped central pond still holds water and is overgrown with reeds. Its date, catching arms and pond shape together give a concrete picture of this historic structure.
St Margaret's Church represents another part of the area’s architectural history: the parish church is Grade I listed, dates from the 13th century and was extended in the late 15th century. On the south side of the churchyard, the lychgate also serves as a war memorial to the First World War. The church thus brings together a long architectural history and a dedicated place of remembrance. Shade House adds another historical dimension. This unlisted heritage asset dates from the 18th century and is associated with smuggling. The historical themes therefore range from church architecture and remembrance to the duck decoy and its association with smuggling. Chronologically, the duck decoy dates from between the church and Shade House.
