Cowes combines sailing with a diverse maritime heritage: the regatta, museums, historic buildings and a parish church with links to seafaring offer different ways to discover the town. The focus of your trip may help you choose a hotel—for example, a stay during Cowes Week, a visit to maritime collections or a sailing activity.

Cowes Week and Sailing

Cowes Week has been held every year in early August since 1826. It was interrupted during both world wars and the Covid pandemic in 2022. The seven-day regatta features more than 500 boats in up to 40 classes and attracts more than 100,000 visitors to Cowes during the event. These event figures may vary from one edition to another. If you want to plan your trip around the regatta, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Ferry travel is also relevant to your planning: you can reach Cowes by ferry from Southampton. The Red Jet takes about 28 minutes to reach West Cowes; the car ferry goes to East Cowes. These services therefore arrive in different parts of town. Check the timetable before your trip when planning your crossing.

Maritime History at the Museum and on the Trail

The Cowes Maritime Heritage Trail connects 15 locations throughout the town and offers insights into the sailing heritage of the Isle of Wight. As an established visitor route, it provides a way to explore Cowes’ maritime history. If you prefer to focus on individual objects and images, the Cowes Maritime Museum offers a different perspective: its collection tells the story of the town and its maritime heritage.

Exhibits at the Cowes Maritime Museum include Uffa Fox’s dinghy Avenger and models of ships built in Cowes by J. Samuel White & Co Ltd. An extensive photographic and paper archive documents the town’s yachting and shipbuilding industries. The museum is located in Cowes Library and admission is free. Check opening hours before your visit.

The Sir Max Aitken Museum offers another perspective on Cowes’ maritime past. It is housed in a magnificent 18th-century building that formerly served as a sailmaking workshop for Ratsey & Lapthorn. Sails for the King’s racing yacht Britannia were made there. The building and shipyard history complement the collection and archive themes at the Cowes Maritime Museum.

Church, Fort and Places of Remembrance

West Cowes Castle is the only surviving one of two forts that Henry VIII had built in 1538–1539 to defend the mouth of the Medina. During the Commonwealth period, the fort was used as a prison. The successive purposes and later use of the building bring its changing history to life.

Holy Trinity is an Anglican parish church on the Cowes waterfront on the Isle of Wight. It was consecrated in 1832 as a place of worship on the Cowes waterfront for sailors and seafarers. Inside, a memorial commemorates the 15 sailors who lost their lives in the 1979 Fastnet Race. The memorial garden offers views across the Solent. Special services are held for the Cowes Week regatta, as well as for the coastguard, the RNLI and seafarers.

At the Classic Boat Museum, visitors can board and explore the lifeboat Jessie Lumb. This offers a hands-on boating experience alongside historic buildings and archival material.
