Romsey and its surrounding area combine historic sites, live performances, markets and destinations in the countryside. When planning your stay, you can first consider whether you are especially interested in cultural history, events, walks or nature: Romsey Abbey and the museums focus on historical themes, while Fishlake Meadows and Sir Harold Hillier Gardens offer different natural landscapes.

History and architecture in Romsey

Romsey Abbey is the largest parish church in Hampshire and dates back to 907 AD. South Garth houses a rare Saxon rood screen from the early 11th century. Tours for groups of more than six people must be booked in advance through the parish office. Check availability before you arrive.

The accredited King John's House and Heritage Centre comprises three buildings with 750 years of history. King John's House and Museum showcases aspects of life in Romsey during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Together, these attractions offer insights into different periods and the town's history.

Broadlands is an 18th-century Palladian mansion built by Prime Minister Palmerston on the edge of Romsey. It is just a short walk from the town centre. Its architectural and historical significance adds another historic mansion to the themes explored at the abbey and museums.

Theatre, railways and swimming

The Plaza Theatre is an Art Deco venue. Its programme includes pantomimes, musicals, comedy, drama, dance, youth productions and live music. This gives visitors a choice of performance styles to suit different interests; if a particular show is important to your trip, plan around the programme.

Romsey Signal Box is a working museum dating from around 1865. Visitors can operate points, set signals and ring bells to control a train simulation. This combines railway history with a hands-on activity. Romsey Rapids offers a different kind of experience: its leisure pool features bubble seats, a pirate ship and a beach area. Swimming and aqua aerobics classes are also available. If you plan to take part in these activities, check operating information in advance.

Walks and nature nearby

The Romsey Circular Walk starts and ends at the Visitor Information Centre on Church Street. Along the way, it passes the Redbridge and Andover Canal and follows Fishlake Stream. The route leaflet is old, so check path conditions before setting out. Some sections of the Test Way can also be used by horse riders and cyclists.

The Romsey Heritage Trail takes walkers through the town's history. It starts at the Visitor Information Centre and is accompanied by an audio guide. Check in advance whether the audio guide is available. Both routes therefore start at the Visitor Information Centre but have different focuses: the Circular Walk follows the canal and stream, while the Heritage Trail centres on the town's history.

Fishlake Meadows, a wetland nature reserve, is near Romsey. Paved paths lead to viewing hides. Sir Harold Hillier Gardens is also nearby: its arboretum covers 180 acres and is home to more than 42,000 trees and shrubs. These features illustrate the difference between the wetland and its viewing paths and the expansive arboretum.

Markets and local produce

The Romsey Farmers’ Market is held on the first Sunday of every month from 10 am to 1 pm. Local farmers, growers and artisan producers gather there to offer fresh seasonal food from Hampshire and the surrounding area. Check the market dates before your trip.

Another market is held regularly in Romsey at the Cornmarket on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. As market times can change, it is worth checking the latest schedule. If you would like to combine a market visit with a walk or a museum visit, the different market days can help you choose suitable travel dates.
