East Tisted Between Landscape and History

East Tisted lies in the protected setting of the South Downs National Park. For planning your trip, two main themes stand out: trails through the landscape and the history of the estate, houses and former railway line. Both are closely connected with the village and offer different points of interest. When choosing your destination, first consider whether hiking should be the main focus of your stay or whether you would also like to explore architecture and local history. This will help you shape your stay around the subjects that interest you personally.

Hiking and Trails in East Tisted

The local network of paths includes numerous footpaths and bridleways, including the Hangers Way. The East Tisted to Newton Valence via Rotherfield Park circular walk is hilly and passes through parkland and woodland, with far-reaching views along the way. The terrain, landscape and views offer practical points to consider when planning this circular walk. The route follows the embankment of the former Meon Valley Railway. The railway embankment brings the former railway line directly into the walk’s present-day route. The railway line ran through East Tisted and was built between 1898 and 1903.

This circular walk starts on Station Road in East Tisted; parking is available opposite the church. As path and parking conditions can change, check the current situation and route before setting out.

Parkland, Houses and Layers of History

Rotherfield Park straddles the A32 between Fareham and Alton, on both sides of East Tisted. This location can be understood on two levels: Fareham and Alton identify the stretch of road, while East Tisted indicates the immediate local connection. The East Tisted estate dates back to the 12th century. Rotherfield Park’s landscaped park and walled pleasure gardens have been documented since 1564. Tisted House stands on Gosport Road in East Tisted and is a Tudor Gothic house dating from the mid-19th century. For this house, style and construction date should be distinguished: Tudor Gothic describes the style, while the mid-19th century is when it was built. East Tisted’s designation as a conservation area is associated with the year 1976. The dates therefore refer to different things: the origin of the estate, the documentation of the gardens, the construction of the house and the designation.

A Regular Event

Holy Communion takes place at St James Church at 10 a.m. on the first, second and third Sunday of each month. This means it is held on the first three Sundays of the month, not every Sunday. If you would like to attend a service during your stay, confirm the time locally before travelling.
