Aylesbury is a destination for travellers looking to combine their stay with culture, architectural history or an event. Its varied attractions include historic buildings, live performances, creative classes, and routes for walks or bike rides. If you’re looking for a hotel in Aylesbury, you can start by considering whether culture, an event or time outdoors is the main focus of your trip.

Culture and Architectural History

The permanent galleries at Discover Bucks explore the history of the people and landscapes of Buckinghamshire—from 200 million years ago to the present day. The story spans the past and present, connecting the landscape with the people of the county. A gallery in Aylesbury also has five themed areas, each inspired by stories by Roald Dahl.

St Mary’s Church is a Grade I listed building. It was built mainly in the 13th century, partly on the site of a Saxon church. The church is also the venue for the Thursday Lunchtime Concerts, which have been held there for over 30 years. Its architectural history and long-running concert series offer two different points of interest for a cultural stay.

Aylesbury Clock Tower stands in the centre of Market Square, on the site of the former Market House. The Grade II listed clock tower was built in 1876–1877 in the Gothic Revival style. The County Hall complex in Market Square is Grade II* listed and forms Buckinghamshire’s most important group of civic buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The façade of County Hall is an early example of Palladianism in a provincial building; it was designed around 1720.

Aylesbury Quaker Meeting House, a Grade II listed meeting house, dates from 1726–1727. Its interior retains dado panelling, a form of panelling on the lower part of the walls. This architectural detail offers a specific insight into the design of the building.

Theatre, Classes and Heritage

Aylesbury Waterside Theatre presents West End productions, comedy and children’s shows. The multi-purpose venue is also used for conferences, meetings and live broadcasts. Queens Park Arts Centre offers weekly participatory workshops, classes and one-day courses; it also presents live theatre, music and comedy. This gives visitors a choice between performances to watch and cultural activities they can take part in themselves.

For digital access to the area’s heritage, Aylesbury offers a free walking tour through the “Trail Tale” app. Unlike a theatre programme or class, it is digital and can be considered when planning a culture-focused stay.

Routes and Time Outdoors

The Platinum Way, formerly known as the Emerald Way, runs for 3 miles from Aylesbury town centre to Aylesbury Vale Parkway station. St Peter’s Greenway is a 1.7-kilometre shared-use path from Berryfields to Buckingham Park. Waddesdon Greenway is a walking and cycling route between Waddesdon and Aylesbury Vale Parkway station. The three routes can therefore be distinguished by their stated endpoints and types of route.

At Aylesbury Basin, the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal is suitable for family walks and watching wildlife along the banks. Vale Park has seating among trees and striking flower beds, as well as opportunities for informal games and picnics. The two places offer different experiences: the canal is ideal for walks and wildlife watching, while the park also offers seating and informal recreational activities.

Friday Market Visit

The Foodie Friday market in Aylesbury offers fresh produce, baked goods and international street food every Friday from 9 am to 2 pm. If you’re planning your stay to include a Friday, these hours can help with planning your day. As the regular offering may change, it’s worth checking the latest market information before your visit.
