Discover Giffnock: Park, Theatre and History
Accommodation in Giffnock
For a stay in Giffnock, the landscape, theatre and architectural history offer different points of interest. Rouken Glen Park has paths along a stream and through a rocky gorge, as well as a walled garden. Eastwood Theatre has a traditional theatre auditorium available for hire. Orchardhill Parish Church was built in 1899 and has a Norman tower. Specific conditions are also important when planning your visit: church visits can be arranged through the church office, and the theatre’s hire arrangements may change.
Rouken Glen Park: Paths, Gorge and Garden
In Rouken Glen Park, paths at higher and lower levels follow the Auldhouse Burn through the rocky gorge of Rouken Glen. The stream, gorge and different levels provide specific landscape features along the walk. At the upper end of Rouken Glen is an artificial waterfall or weir. You can reach this structure from the southern end of the boating pond or by following the paths along the Auldhouse Burn. This gives you two approaches to choose from if you want to make the waterfall or weir a specific destination on your route.
Another point of interest is the walled garden, with formal flower beds and pergolas where climbing roses grow. The landscaped flower beds and pergolas are quite different from the rocky gorge and the course of the stream, so the park offers both garden architecture and a landscape shaped by geology. The area around the stream has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) because of its significant geological features. This designation applies to the area around the stream and its geological significance.
Eastwood Theatre and Getting There
Eastwood Theatre is available for hire. Its traditional theatre auditorium has raked seating and 330 seats. If you are planning an event in the auditorium, check the current hire arrangements in advance, as they may change. The theatre is a 15-minute walk from Giffnock railway station. The station is on the line from Glasgow Central to East Kilbride. If you are travelling by train, check the current timetable so you can factor the route information into your specific travel plans.
Church and Heritage Centre
Orchardhill Parish Church was built in 1899 and has a Norman tower. Its year of construction and the tower’s architectural style offer two different points of interest for travellers interested in cultural history: one is a precise date, the other an architectural term. You can arrange visits by contacting the church office. Get in touch before travelling, as visitor arrangements may change. Giffnock Heritage Centre is located in Giffnock Library. If you would like to visit the Centre, check the current visitor arrangements.
