Bridge Of Cally is shaped by its location beside two rivers and at the meeting point of several glens. The village is arranged around the bridge over the River Ardle; at Bridge of Cally, the Black Water flows into the River Ardle. Both rivers rise in open hill country and are stony and lined with alder trees for much of their length. The landscape combines farmland and woodland. Bridge of Cally also forms the gateway to Strathardle: here, Glenshee and Strathardle meet and join to form Glenericht.

Hiking the Cateran Trail and the Old Military Road

The Cateran Trail passes through Bridge of Cally and is a fully waymarked route of 64 miles, or 103 kilometres, through Perthshire and the Angus Glens. This is the length of the entire trail, not a section in the village. The section from Bridge of Cally leads through Blackcraig Forest. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between the long-distance route and the specific forest section.

Another walking route is the historic Old Military Road from Blairgowrie, which begins in Bridge of Cally. The section near Bridge of Cally forms part of a 100-mile road built between 1748 and 1757 from Coupar Angus via Braemar, Corgarff and Grantown-on-Spey to Fort George. The two routes also differ in their route descriptions: the Cateran Trail is fully waymarked, while there is no path on the middle section of the Old Military Road from Blairgowrie. The walk there crosses grass and then passes through a planted shelterbelt.

Rivers, culture and other activities

The River Ardle shapes more than just the landscape around the bridge. The A93, the Snow Roads Scenic Route, also crosses the river at Bridge of Cally. Cally House is another historic feature of the village and is a listed building.

Two salmon-fishing beats are available on the Black Water and the River Ardle at Bridge of Cally. As availability and booking arrangements can change, check them before making plans. For a different kind of route, the Alyth Gravel Network: Balnabroich Stone & Blackcraig Forest starts at the Bridge of Cally Hotel.

The location may also be a factor when planning a winter trip: Glenshee Ski Centre is near Bridge of Cally. Check current operating information when making specific plans. Walking routes, a historic road, riverside scenery and these seasonal interests each offer a different focus. Consider which of these aspects matters most for your stay in the area.
