Bridgend offers several specific points to consider when planning a trip: historic rows of houses, the history of Champfleurie Oil Works, outdoor activities and a bus connection. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether your stay will focus more on exercise, local history or trips to other places. This makes it easier to assess Bridgend in light of your specific travel interests.

Connections and planning

Lothian Country Service 231 connects Bridgend, Linlithgow and Bathgate with Livingston. If your plans include several of these places, this connection is a useful point of reference. Timetable details may change, so check the times for your travel day before arranging other activities around them.

Bridgend Community Centre can also be part of your plans: it can be booked seven days a week between 8:00 am and 10:00 pm. Booking arrangements may change. If a booking is important for your stay, check the arrangements for your specific date in advance.

Outdoor activities

Bridgend Golf & FootGolf offers an 18-hole FootGolf course. If you want to make this activity a firm part of your stay, check the booking details before you arrive. The 18-hole figure gives you a specific point of reference when comparing FootGolf with other leisure interests in Bridgend.

The Locality Plan for the period 2023–2026 also listed access to good woodland walks and a pump track in Bridgend. These offer different starting points for planning leisure activities: the walks involve exercise in the woods, while the pump track offers another activity. Along with FootGolf, you can sort these interests according to the type of exercise that is most important to your travel plans.

Rows of houses and industrial history

Five rows of the largest houses, each with two flats, have been preserved as “Auldhill Cottages”. The Bridgend Rows were built to serve Champfleurie Oil Works. This brings the residential buildings and a clearly defined industrial purpose together in a shared historical context.

Champfleurie Oil Works included facilities for processing crude oil, a refinery and a candle factory. These different components bring the industrial focus of the works to life: in addition to crude oil processing, they included refining and candle making. This makes it possible to understand the local history through not only the preserved rows of houses but also the functions of the former works.

Around 2002, the former Champfleurie Oil Works site was turned into a golf course. This later use belongs to a different chapter of local history from the industrial operation. The redevelopment thus connects the history of the former works site with a later leisure use, without treating the two as if they occurred at the same time.

This way, you can assess Bridgend in terms of the specific interests that matter to your own travel plans.
