Bathgate: History, Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Bathgate
Bathgate: Town History and Nature
Bathgate brings together several themes for a stay: the town’s history, an Art Deco-style theatre, parkland and trails for walking and cycling. Depending on your travel plans, you can explore culture and outdoor activities. You can also plan your journey around the regular train services or the town’s location near the M8 junctions.
History and Culture in the Town Centre
The Bennie Museum is dedicated to the history and life of Bathgate. It opened on 20 May 1989 as a museum on this subject. If you would like to discover historic buildings and places on foot, you can include the Bathgate History Trail in your plans: the walk takes 60 minutes and visits historic buildings and places in the town centre. The trail includes 14 panels in the town centre and another at the entrance to Kirkton Park.
The Reconnect Regal Theatre is a unique Art Deco-style venue in the centre of Bathgate. Its programme includes professional and community entertainment, including children’s shows, films, theatre, comedy, music and club nights. If a particular performance is important to your stay, check the current programme and event dates as you plan.
Parks, Wetlands and the Bathgate Hills
The Bogburn Flood Lagoons consist of three open freshwater pools. Marshy grassland and wetlands surround the pools, creating a habitat favoured by waterfowl. This gives you a nature-focused option to consider alongside the town’s history.
Balbardie Park is a large, multi-use park in an open, undulating landscape with views. The Peace Mile walking route loops around the park. The rocks of the Bathgate Hills formed more than 330 million years ago. Nearby Bathgate is also Tailend Moss, an important area for bog plants and damselflies and dragonflies. These places offer different nature experiences: parkland, wetlands and the distinctive plant and insect life of the bog.
Walking, Cycling and Other Activities
There are different routes to choose from for a loop through the park or a walk to historic sites: the Peace Mile circles Balbardie Park, while the Bathgate History Trail focuses on historic buildings and places in the town centre and is designed as a 60-minute walk. For a cycling trip, Bathgate 28 uses the Union Canal towpath and National Cycle Route 75. The off-road sections allow traffic-free cycling. The route climbs into the Bathgate Hills and offers views across much of Central Scotland, including the Trossachs and Ben Lomond.
Golf is another way to spend your time here. Bathgate Golf Club has a largely flat 18-hole course measuring 6,328 yards, with a par of 71. Balbardie Park Golf Course is a 9-hole course in Balbardie Park of Peace, near Xcite Bathgate. The difference in the number of holes gives you a clear basis for comparing the two courses; visitors who are not members are also welcome at Balbardie Park Golf Course. Check the applicable terms before planning a round. Fly fishing is available at Ballencrieff Fishery, which caters to anglers of all experience levels.
