Discover Kingussie: trails, landscapes and history

Kingussie can be planned around a range of interests: trails with views of the Cairngorms and Monadhliath, the landscape of the Insh Marshes, local history and a specific cultural programme each offer a different focus. There is also an alternative route in the network of trails between Kingussie and Newtonmore. As you prepare, you can first decide whether you would rather focus on mountain views, a named floodplain, historical connections or an event date.

Trails and landscape

The walking, cycling and horse-riding trails around Kingussie offer views of the Cairngorms and Monadhliath mountain ranges. Whether you walk, cycle or ride, the trails combine different ways of getting around with a clear connection to the landscape: the two mountain ranges.

The Insh Marshes offer a different geographical point of reference. They cover 10 square kilometres of the River Spey floodplain between Kingussie and Kincraig. While the trails are defined by their use and views, the Insh Marshes are identified as a specific landscape area by their size and location. These offer two distinct focuses for planning your trip: trails with mountain views on the one hand, and a named floodplain on the other.

The Speyside Way offers an alternative route of about 2.5 miles in the network of trails between Kingussie and Newtonmore. Both the connection between the two places and an approximate route length are specified here. This is a different point of reference from the trails around Kingussie, which are described by their different uses and views of the mountain ranges.

Railway station and local history

Kingussie railway station dates from 1894. William Roberts designed it for the Highland Railway Company. Its historical context therefore includes not only the year but also a specific design by a named designer for a named client.

The history of Kingussie Golf Club begins earlier: the club was established in June 1891 following a meeting to form a golf club for the area. Chronologically, this founding meeting took place three years before the year of the railway station. Together, the two dates offer different perspectives on local history: the founding of a golf club and the design of a railway station.

Culture and guided experiences

The Storylands Sessions are a monthly live event in Kingussie, accompanied by additional writing workshops and musical performances. If you would like to include this cultural programme in your trip, check the event dates in advance.

The Reserve Tours at Highland Wildlife Park are guided drives through the drive-through reserve and must be booked online in advance. The two offerings involve different planning considerations: the event date is key for the Storylands Sessions, while the Reserve Tours require advance booking.
